FOUR left guards over the first half of the season. I don't think we can overstate just how bad the revolving door on the left side was last year at both tackle and guard. Then the worst guy on the line plays every snap, lol. I remember distinctly watching the Falcons game down at Lynch's and when Lawrence threw that beautiful TD pass to Ridley and just got blown up by the DT I thought, "He's not going to last the season that way." Here's the link to the YouTube, it won't play embedded so you'll have to go there. It was a great play for him to dodge the blitz to begin with, but the second guy smoked him. He's a tough kid and hopped right up, but that play was the one where I really thought he wasn't going to survive the season because we were seeing those hits several times a game at that point. No one holds up to that kind of beating in this League.

Took a lick or two like that against the Bills in London as well.
Thread title immediately hearkened back to Fisher and his 'no more 7-9 baloney', although he didn't say baloney.
(Speaking of which tomorrow is Fisher Day!)
I'm not as worried about the record as I am about keeping the QB upright. Do that and the record will take care of itself. Get in the postseason, whether that's 9-8, 13-4, or anything in between.

That hit could have been prevented by the right guard Sherff. He got lost momentarily right at the end of the play. Fortner actually did his job on that one I think.

Watch it again, there were two blitzers coming through after the left end followed ETN out wide. Sherff moves left at the snap to help Fortner with the down linemen which resulted in 4 on 2, while Anton got hit with both blitzers. Anton lets the outside free blitzer go to push the inside blitzer further in, then TLaw extends the play and Anton let the second blitzer slide back outside where he popped Lawrence. If Scherff had read the blitz right he would not have doubled with Fortner, he'd of walled off the inside blitzer and it would've been fine. Anton made enough of a play to get Lawrence free, but he just didn't recover and left the gap that 55 slid through to hit the QB. Scherff missed it at the start, likely because he was busy playing Assistant Right Center all season.

Kudos for catching it.
I'm still researching. I don't think a single NFL team has had the same record for 3 consecutive seasons. Still looking.

Nice analysis and pick up. Thus, PFF's preseason #12 rated center for 2024 is now a Jaguar.
For reference
Fortner - run block 40.0 - pass block 54.9 - total 44.3
Morris - run block 61.5 - pass block 72.5 - total 63.9
Going into 2024 Morris is projected to be the 12th best center in the league by PFF.
Maybe this year Sherff can just play guard and we can use more than just simple blocking patterns.

If he plays that well this could be a top 15 or so line, the only real issue left would be that Scherff isn't much of a run blocker anymore. The left tackle is an average guy and really not much difference if he can't go and Little steps in, left guard can be top 15 if he's healthy, and I think Anton is poised to be a top 10 guy if he takes the step this offseason. The group as a whole is MUCH better if Morse is that good.

I'm not sure why no one acknowledged my post with the brilliant edit of that infamous speech, but I caught the reference.

Also, shouldn't it be 98% certain it's 9-8, again?
You got it first. Rep for you. And yes, should have put 98%.
We are a Mitch Morse or Cam Robinson injury away from being 6 - 11 or 7 - 10.

We were fine with Little, he wasn't the problem.

Moving from Robinson to Little would be a minor downgrade. Moving from Morse to Fortner would be a huge downgrade. That's the one I would be worried about. I don't see any decent backup for Morse on our squad.

Baalke couldn’t find a decent backup with sufficient arm length.

I'm a little concerned that Baalke and Pederson aren't taking our offensive line seriously enough.

I agree, but we'll see this season if they've handled it competently and seriously enough or not.
Hopefully another vet C/G will arrive before Labor Day.

Or 'Roidy Roddy Fortner.
I wonder if the guy can be salvaged as a competent backup with enough strength training.
