That in itself means CJ should be done here. But I also think some team might have interest in the next few weeks as starters get hurt, so they should continue to answer the phone.
So, we traded a 6th round pick for him; would you accept a 4th round pick for him? And go into the season with CJ as the backup?
oh cripes every dang day
if you can turn a 6 into a 4 you do it; even if that means you roll the dice hoping not to need your backup to win a game or three. That 4 can land you a pretty darn good backup option if you need it.
Mac easily.

I'd have to think hard about it. We're no worse off than we were last year in that case, but last year it was also a problem. The question is whether or not Jones has more value on the bench or on the table, at this moment I don't know. He isn't going to be here more than 1 year no matter what, so maybe move him for the draft capital and look for a different back up for this year that can hit the PS for a few weeks then replace CJ on the 53.
Not buying this. I can see us resigning him at the end of the year to be QB2 a couple more years

You do realize that he has to agree to sign, yeah? You think he won't leave here for any team that offers him the chance to start? Oh, you'd probably tag him though.

Ok let me see if I understand. We spent a 6th round pick on a QB that is better than CJ. The issue is if he plays backup for us this year he may get a better offer and paycheck elsewhere to start next year. Which would mean we would get a comp pick in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th round in 2026. Also, sometime this year a team may trade us a 4th round pick or higher because they have an injured QB and need a replacement.
Wow, for the second time in one day we are calling our management crafty right?
Yeah - our F.O. is making lots of good moves and we're beginning to experience the "good problem to have" portion of that landscape.
Also - can we stop for a second to think about how many 2023 draft picks showed out in that preseason game??
Lacy
Braswell
Abdullah
Hodges
Miller
Washington
Damn...
That's good stuff! We are seeing a third year staff developing talent, and now the defensive staff appears to have real teachers in place too.

It's awesome to see late round picks hit as well
They had that show with JP Shadrick, Pete Prisco, and Tony Boselli last night, and Prisco and Boselli were both strongly impressed with Cooper Hodges. They said Hodges can move defensive linemen off the line of scrimmage better than any of our starting interior linemen. I made a point of focusing on Hodges when I was watching the game, and I have to agree. He's impressive. I was a skeptic until that game, because he was a 7th round pick who hadn't played a game, but I watched the game and I have to say, he looks like a really good player.

I didn't know he was out there, and that might be the best thing one can say about a lineman.

Lol, if a team wanted him they would have traded for him. It's clear no team wants him as a starter. He's not a secret lol. I think he could position start in this league but other GMs don't or the would have traded a 5th or 6th for him. Hes going to be a back up at this point and it's clear he lives it here un his home town. A 2nd round comp pick? Lol

If a team thought he could start for them you don't think they would have gave up a 6th for him? Tag him? Huh. It's clear you don't know what the price would be to tag a QB

Really guy, just quit with this. You can't compare a team trading a pick versus a guy signing as a free agent. Mac Jones likely wants to be a starter again, so there's no reason for him to sign here. It would be in his interest to sign somewhere even if he ends up the backup there because he has NO shot at being the starter here. I know you have no idea how the NFL works, but damn, this one is really down there on the "dumb" meter. And it's clear that you also don't understand mocking sarcasm. I really feel bad that I always have to explains such basic things to you, we should find you a primary school education program for adults or something.

If any GM thought he was a starting caliber QB they would have traded a 6th for him. No GMs would pass on a guy they think is a starting caliber QB to not give up a 6th, i understand exactly how the league works and understand that. Every QB wants to be a starter. It's hard to get the mocking when you don't understand most things so I knew you wouldnt know what a tagged QB makes.
So, now that Mac Jones is the primary backup, he'll get the start in the Tampa game and raise his stock.

Likely, but it doesn't matter because no one will want him according to a certain low IQ poster here who should of knowd better.

Yea and there is no one on earth that would trade a #1 for someone else's backup QB that had only started one game. Well except that happened here and Rob Johnson turned into a #9 pick. Also, no one would give Minshew a 2 year contract either. LOL !!! Now, I don't see that happening here but, if you look I gave a range and if you do not focus on the extremes, either is plausible depending on the other team's needs.
I feel it was just a very good use of a 6th round pick. Definitely seems to be an upgrade to the backup QB here. We will see in the next 2 games and better than the 3ed used for Ridley. Probably made possible by this being his hometown and the rep of our head coach. Depending upon Jone's future aspirations we probably agreed to not pick up the 5th year option.

You're conflating today with tomorrow. The conversation centered around what happens at the end of this season. Guys get hurt, guys retire, rookies struggle. Teams that weren't in the market for a QB last offseason may suddenly be scrambling for a quick fix.
Think of Mac in terms of the Minshews and Darnolds of the league - there's always going to be a few teams without a cemented-in starter that will offer a fighting chance to be the top guy. They may not be the long-term answer, but they're going to chase opportunity while it's still there.
J.J McCarthy done for the season, meniscus needs repaired. Let's send Mac Jones to the Vikings for a 2nd RD pick.
Dilly, dilly!

With what I heard about our offensive line's performance against the Bucs, we may want to keep Mac Jones.

Yeah. I know. Tampa Bay has a decent front four though. They had 48 sacks last year. 7th best overall defense in the NFL.
