Just keeping it interesting as we enter the season and teams encounter injuries or performance drop-offs at QB.
I voted for the picks purely from a value sense. If TLaw is down for any prolonged period, I'm not expecting any backup to keep the train full steam ahead; I don't see Mac being a long-term solution at backup, so sure, take the picks and either leave CJB in place or pilfer from others' PS, and focus on a longer-term solution down the road.
Without an assurance that Mac is going to be happy in the role of backup and offers a possibility of return next season, it would be very hard to turn down the picks.
If it's just keep one over the other, Mac all day from what we've seen on field the past two weeks.

Just for the uniforms he requires for strength and conditioning.
I was thinking sideline gear, could make things rather interesting.

I would take a 3rd rounder if a team was needy before the trade deadline.

Keeping Mac unless its a mid to high 2 would consider it.
08-21-2024, 01:43 PM
The only way I go lower than a 2 would be a 3 or 4 but potentially a 1. If he plays X games, wins, or other qualifiers, it becomes a #1. Then if they sign him, they give up another future pick.

I'd take a third in a blink of an eye. Fourth maybe. Turning a 6th into a 3rd in a few months is a special move. We're not moving forward with Mac long term. That third could be a 3-4 player or possibly more.

Do backup quarterbacks make a *beep beep beep* sound?
Just wondering.

Only if they are Jared lorenzan, rip

I said take the pick. If TL is going to be out more than a game or two we can basically offer that same pick for a new backup QB.

I don't like that idea. The new guy wouldn't have any knowledge of the system. We'd have to play Beathard. And then we would have basically wasted the pick we got for Jones.

Yeah I can't speak to how big of a problem that might be. There will be guys you could trade for that have experience with Doug or with a similar system. One is Nate Sudfeld. Or you just roll with CJ.

I have said it before and I'll say it again. Why do so many "fans" want to trade away talent/depth so quickly for draft picks? Especially when that talent/depth is young and a pretty known quantity. Why not keep the best players, even if their role is to serve as a backup? A draft pick is a "roll-of-the-dice".
In my opinion Mac Jones has earned the spot as the backup and should be retained. There is no reason to gamble that CJ or some other team's practice guy would be able to perform as well as the backup should Trever get injured. Mac is "cheap" right now in terms of salary since he is still on a rookie contract. When he hits free agency he would only get more money should a team decide to pick him up to be a starter.

Because team control has value. We have realistically none over Mac and you can only play 1 QB. When a QBs value is high and he's not your franchise guy you move on. Draft another one next year.

It doesn't make sense to me. You never sell your best assets in order to raise money to buy lottery tickets. If a team wants to trade draft picks for CJ, then yes go for it. Mac is clearly the better option and is pretty much cheap "insurance" should something happen to Trevor.

If you can turn a sixth into a third in a few months, you'd be foolish not to. Mac is cheap, but he's also likely gone at season's end. Comes down to whether you think the value of keeping him around plus any compensatory pick consideration is worth more than a top 100-ish pick and the roll of the dice should TLaw be out for any period of time.
Now if Mac wins the job and signs a 3-year extension to stay here? The trade package is going to need to be a LOT more sweeter to get me thinking about a change.
Until we see that extension, there's just as much risk of him moving on as there is that our draft pick ends up another reserve linebacker

You bought a car a few months back for $1000. It's decent, but you know if you want to keep it long-term, you're going to have to pay $4000 in repair work by winter's end. Someone offers you $1700 for the car today.
Do you sell, knowing that you can probably find a $700 car that is good enough to get you through the winter, then you can seriously start shopping for a better ride with your $4k budget and an extra $1k from your quick deal; or
Do you stay put and see whether or not it's worth paying the $4000 after the winter?
There's risk in both options.

Mac has no chance to win the starting job. His value is in does he make our team better than someone else in the event Trevor gets hurt. If we were just recouping a sixth or even moving up to a 5 no way. But a 3, where plenty of potential long term starters come from you absolutely make that trade. Unless of course you feel comfortable that Mac will sign to be a long term backup here, which I find extremely unlikely.

He's not resigning here, his only value is as the back up for this year or what we can trade him for. For a 3rd he's packing his bags.

I would be with you on this, but for the questions about our offensive line. Last year I have to believe TL played when he shouldn't. This due to the fear our backup did not give us a chance to win. This year with Mac as backup this would be different. That is the rub. Trade him then need him and wish you had not or trade him and not need him. Interesting odds, need a very strong crystal ball. We do have two 3's and 4th's next year already. It will be interesting, especially if they can get someone they half a bit of confidence in. They just signed E.J. Perry ?
