Could be worse! Could have drafted Johnny Footbal

I was one of those that wanted JF, thinking he'd become the QB we needed to take us to the next level.... I was soooo wrong

Not to be the guy who turns this political but you'd be damned to find someone who has ever driven on the road without some sort of impairment before. Whether medicinal related, fatigue related (I'm looking at you DRob), hearing loss, dilated eyes, texting, phone calls or whatever. Any of those can risk the lives of others on the road. I don't sympathize either but you have to point the finger everywhere.

That's a pretty strange title given the redemptive slant it takes. Anyway, nice story. Crazy that he still wears that little girl's bracelet to this day. He wakes up and must look at it every morning and yet he still can't seem to kick his addiction and move forward with his career. That just tells you how powerful it must be.

Maybe he's a great guy personally.  It's difficult for some of us to understand the nature of addiction.  I'm sure if he could overcome it, he would.  The tragedy is that he is/was such a great talent but ultimately you are accountable for your actions.  Hope he can get his life straightened out.

Man, sometimes it's just that they don't want to. In my personal experiences with vice troubles the persons weren't addicted, they just hadn't reached the point where they wanted to stop partying. When they reached that point they put it down and didn't go back to that same level again. I'm not discounting physical addictions, but sometimes a guy just wants to drink and party. Maybe JB just likes that more than playing football and he reached the point where he can afford not to.

All I know is as talented as he was, and as starved for quality WR play as Jacksonville has been, had Blackmon been able to stay clean and sober, he could have owned this town.

 

His demons wound up being a blessing in disguise for this team though, because with him on the roster and active, we could have won at least one more game in 2013, which could have dropped us as low as 8th in the 2014 draft order, which means we may well have missed out on Bortles, Lee, Robinson, et al.

Honestly, he's not even worth commenting on anymore.

Addiction goes beyond physical dependence.  There's a psychological aspect to it too which is why people who have recovered even for years can relapse.  If someone is still getting busted after everything he's gone through, then it's definitely not a "want to" issue at that point.

In Justin's case, it was/is an addiction...

A former roommate of mine saw him in her restaurant during the dead zone before his last training camp with us. JB was cut off after 8 double cocktails... for lunch.

He was suspended indefinitely shortly afterwards.

I totally agree that Blackmon would have owned the town. Heck, as ecstatic as we are about ARob and Hurns, Blackmon was even better. You make an interesting point that if he kept his act straight, we might not even have Bortles, etc, so maybe it is all for the best. Part of me hopes he might still return even if he's only a fraction of the player he once was.


 

Watching that news clip, I keep picturing a Youtube video with Liv's dad crying and saying "Leave Justin Blackmon alone!"

He was a rare talent. I hope he eventually gets the help he needs

If he was sober, he could be up there with A-Rob. He's not as physically gifted, but I think Blackmon is a more natural receiver. He catches the ball as if it was a handed off to him. He can catch and turn up field in a blink of an eye, without thinking.

I think ARob is a better player. What makes you think Blackmon is/was?

ARob is a better player because ARob doesn't have an addiction issue and has his head on straight and has a great work ethic.  Same for Hurns, but make no mistake Blackmon was a terrific talent.  He had the best hands I've ever seen and while he was closer to Hurns in terms of straight ahead speed he had a gift for getting open.
