I agree that a religion forum would basically just end up turning into a bunch of flame war's between people insulting other people's faith's. Moreover, any serious, rational discussion about religious/spiritual questions and issues, requires a fairly in-depth knowledge of philosophy, theology, rationalism, ability to use reason and logic, etc. I don't mean to sound insulting, but I don't think anybody on this MB is mature enough to handle religious content in a serious objective manner using the methods described above.

If we hold the discussions on this board to those standards we'd have no board.

I disagree. Maybe you meant most.

Some of us like driving those trains though.
Quote:I think it would be nice to be able to frame political discussions through the religious elements that obviously drive them without needing to worry that we might be breaking a rule.  That being said, I feel like a religious forum is a bad idea. I mean, the political forum is feisty enough.

I agree with you 100%.  Some political topics almost require some form of religious discussion due to their very nature.  Again though, some of our moderators/admins have reasonable judgement while others don't (in my opinion).  After all, they are pretty much just every day "normal" people.  That being said to be fair, some of the discussions in the Political Forum tend to "walk a fine line" with regards to the rules, and I can't recall a thread being removed for the discussion at hand.

Snarky veiled backhanded insults.

Exactly. We can't even have a discussion about a religious forum without someone making the type of post that makes respectful religious discussion impossible.
So.... Some of us apparently feel like we can have multiple lengthy, informative, healthy and civil conversations about the one topic that has been blamed for more wars, death, acts of terrorism, and pure hate speech.

I applaud those of you that think you have the ability to discuss these matters at length without major conflict. But, it should not happen. Hell, we have a hard enough time around here discussing uniforms and helmets.

Heaven forbid... Seems like people are looking for something now. I think we should be basing it on what is allowed on the entire board and that is well below what isn't allowed.

Politics literally follows in that same mold and it has moved forward IMO pretty well. Just sayin.

It really is amazing how afraid posters and the management is of religious discussion. I realize on one hand this is a sports message board and maybe others don't even have a political section, but the reactions on this thread right away were strongly against. Just from a social perspective it is interesting to me how difficult it is for people to discuss things they disagree with. It isn't surprising just interesting. We really do still have a long way to go as a species...

(I understand it from a moderator's perspective)
As long as posters are allowed to remain anonymous the fear is justified.

As was noted, you have twenty pages regarding uniforms, uniform numbers and helmets (a religious issue with many around here.)

There is already a fair amount of Muslim-bashing on the political thread; I imagine it would be Allah v. Jesus in no time.

As much unintentional humor as it would provide, which I would enjoy, I don't see discussion of religion being opened to the masses any time soon.

It would be "You can't handle the truth!" over and over and over ...

"bashing"

...LOL...

Bunny hop your way to my next family reunion, it's like a CSX demolition derby.
I was skeptical of the politics section when it first was introduced. I stayed away for the first few months, but I have to admit it's actually come along pretty nicely. There are hot spots every now and then, but things are civil 99% of the time.

However, religion is a faith, there are never facts that help defend one's point, only scripture. To that end, a discussion of religion will always end unresolved to a level that can lead to frustration, hurt feelings, and eventually bans of many of our jungle brothers.

I'd prefer to just leave well enough alone
