It really is amazing how afraid posters and the management is of religious discussion. I realize on one hand this is a sports message board and maybe others don't even have a political section, but the reactions on this thread right away were strongly against. Just from a social perspective it is interesting to me how difficult it is for people to discuss things they disagree with. It isn't surprising just interesting. We really do still have a long way to go as a species...
(I understand it from a moderator's perspective)
After the bloodbath that was what almost shut this board down I don't want to see a religion forum. I was totally against religion itself in any form back then and it bothered me to see how people were attacked for their beliefs. You and I had some discussion in the last year or so in PM that was interesting but that was two people who have respect for each other. Imagine the many personalities on this board and how it would work out. Not so good.

i think if this section does get passed that it's mandatory that Megadeth's "Holy Wars" plays on constant loop while users are in any of it's threads to discuss religion.

They have to appeal to the extreme liberal progressive demographic, thats why it will never be allowed.
Im in the minority, but I feel a religious section would benefit everybody. From the non-believers, to the different religions being discussed in a educational, informative way civil manner.

I've floated the idea of opening up religion for limited discussion in the political forum before, but not now. Recent events have brought out the worst in some posters I once held in high regard (and still do, really, and it's not just who you think I'm referring to). The thread about the soldier kicked off a military base more than proves that we're not mature enough to handle having our faith questioned here. Liberal and conservative have nothing to do with it.

Quote:Politics change, there is a debate to be had. Religion on the other hand is a belief system, logic, reasoning, debates, none of it changes religion. so what's the point? You'd just have a religion bashing thread every day from different posters, and then believers defending their belief system for whatever reason. Is someone going to really convert over a message board?
Yeah there would be some people who may be over zealous, but I dont think the majority of those discussions would go down in that manner of trying to convert someone on a message board.
i would look at it more along the lines of someone just going through a life changing event that they wanted to discuss it, I would think a more fruitful conversation would take place if someone wanted to genuinely praise their spiritual leader.
Just my thoughts.............

Is it comments like mine, or the honest assessment?
The fact is that in the Orlando nightclub shooting thread, I wanted to post a very simple response of prayers..God....Comfort, etc but knew I would quickly get a warning. That is different from limited discussion about Religion which I support as well.
My overall "beef" feelings is why should a person be mocked for offering prayers of support? That is what this really entails.
In the thread about Will Smith being killed, a poster made the comment about praying for him family, and another poster mocked his response.

That's a gross over simplification, and not true. As I recall, there was a complaint that reached the PTB and it was not from someone whose liberal sensitivities were offended.

We often have threads offering prayers and support, no warning has been issued and the threads are left up.

You're correct, nobody should be mocked, but the reality is they will be, and when it happens things can quickly spiral out of control. It happens.
