I am sitting here watching the ESPN Mock draft with the media reporters making the picks (DiRocco) with McShay and Bill Polian commenting on the players.

DiRocco picked Jack, and Polian began to analyze.  He said that Jack would do well in our system, but not as a MLB.  He said Jack wasn't strong enough to be a MLB.  He said he would fit best as a Will.

As you probably know, Caldwell rose through the ranks as a Polian protégé before becoming Jaguars GM.  Assuming they see eye to eye on Jack, it becomes more doubtful to me that the Jaguars will take him at 5.

Most of the speculation-at least from my perspective, centered around whether Jack was BIG enough to play the position.  He looked so natural and athletic in coverage and running the ball, it was assumed by many he'd be too small to play the position.  But once people did the research, I and others realized he was actually bigger than Kuechly.  But apparently in Polian's eyes, strength did not accompany his size, apparently making him ill suited to MLB and more suited to Will.

The problem there is the Jaguars already have a good young player at will in Telvin Smith.  He has been good enough to win defensive player of the week a couple of times.  Despite some who say he isn't good in coverage, he has made big plays in the passing game, including an INT for a TD vs. Buffalo.  Of course, you could make the argument that Jack would be an upgrade over Smith, and you could never have enough fast, athletic LBs, and Smith would be amazing depth.  But that doesn't seem to be the best use of the talent on the roster.  To me, if he isn't strong enough to play MLB, he's marginally strong enough to play Otto.  While Skuta can certainly be upgraded, I wonder if Jack is the guy to fit that position.  I would envision a bigger guy with more length (Floyd if we trade down would seem to make sense).

A couple of additional considerations.  It's entirely possible Caldwell and Polian don't see eye to eye on Jack's ability to play MLB.  Neither guy has been 100% perfect in drafting.  It's also entirely possible Jack can improve his strength and power, and even if he isn't the best player to play MLB his first year, perhaps later in his career he can make the move successfully.

But if Caldwell shares Polian's concerns about Jack's ability to play MLB, and sees a Jack pick as somewhat redundant to Smith, perhaps, in addition to the questions regarding his knee, that would be enough to cause Caldwell to go in another direction on Thursday night.

You may be overthinking it juuuuuust a tad....
Perhaps I am.

But I respect Polian enough to value his opinion on Jack, and Jack's fit into our scheme has to play a role in determining whether we take him.

Ryan Ohalloran, although being wrong many times, also said its a possibility the jags like Jack at the will and that they may not be as in love with Telvin Smith as everyone thinks.
Super, that, too, is a distinct possibility.

I really like Jack as a player for us.  I hope he can successfully play MLB.  Seeing him and Telvin Smith in nickel and dime packages is promising.

Say whaaaaaaaaaat???
Dude is a playmaker.  I dont really care about positions.  Just put guys on the field who make plays.

With all due respect to Polian, Jack is a very versatile LB, and I believe he could excel at any of the 3 LB spots.

Did you miss all the threads about Jack being a SS/LB hybrid?

His athleticism would overcome any perceived issues of strength.

He looks plenty strong though. A little work on technique and leverage, and he will be fine anywhere on the field.

Have to disagree. Put him as a box safety when Poz is out there and then put him at MLB in nickel and passing situations and let him run wild
If take on strength is a concern with Myles Jack from a Jaguars brass standpoint,   they likely will consider how valuable Jack would be in Nickel situations ( which are often over 50 % of the time in today's NFL )  compared to him having somewhat less value in base 4-3 situations.   With Telvin Smith and Jack at their best,  it's hard to imagine any team having a better set of playmaking LBs in the Nickel.

Dont take what Polian says at face value, Jack would be a perfect ILB due to his coverage skills, we wont be drafting him as an old school thumper ILB, plus Jack would be moved around a lot anyways

I've seen him blow up 300 lb offensive lineman, I think he's plenty strong to play mlb, the only question Imo will be be his health. Personally think it's a non issue but we will have to see if the Jags feel the same way. I gotta imagine they are very interested if they flew out too Cali to work him out. nfl.com is reporting he might possibly slide out of top 5 even top 10.
That is a lot of over analyzing of one man's opinion. The likeliness of Dave and Polian seeing eye to eye on every prospect is highly unlikely.
My biggest takeaway from Polian analyzing the pick was that he had heard Jack's knee issues were being overblown.

Do you have a link to Ryan O. saying that?
Can anyone photo shop Jack in a Jags uni?

Type in #mylesjack on Instagram and scroll through the posts.. You'll eventually see a couple of people who photoshopped him in a Jags uni.

I remember hearing it too. It was on 1010xl like a week or two ago I believe. I was pretty surprised when I heard it. There's just no way.

Telvin has some things that need to improve, he needs to be more of a playmaker (although he showed flashes last year), but he is no doubt one of our better defenders on defense and is still very young and on the way up. One of my favorite players to watch.
