Idk if I'm crazy, but listen to this interview Dave did with John Clayton yesterday.

At about the 5:15 mark Clayton talks about how the defense looked faster last year during practices with the Bucs offense and how our FA signings will only make it that much faster. Caldwell then says "yeah, and we still have the 4th pick in the draft"...Afterwards he says they have 7 more picks after that, but it definitely sounds like their primary target is defense with the 4th pick as he unconsciously let slip there. Caldwell's comment sounds like a classic freudian slip to me.

Intentional slip of the tongue to create smokescreen effect.

smokescreen effect for what?? No team is about to trade up over 4 for a running back which is the only offensive position we'd take at 4.

Hmmmmm........."Bouye can play inside or out"........maybe Latimore? I wouldn't be  unhappy with that. Would have Ramsey/Latimore  outside......Bouye inside.......Colvin in dime pkg

Sign me up for Lattimore right now.
Yea that's what it seems like to me. We really might draft Lattimore at 4. I really can't predict what's going to happen draft night.

If we draft Lattimore they're really not playing about the secondary. We'd have three legit shutdown corners. I don't think any team in the league can say that.

a nickel corner at 4 would be the biggest waste of a draft pick. i would take lamp before i took a nickel corner

Nickel is 70% of the snaps now, just fyi. Think of how the Broncos shut down everything with 3 beast corners in Talib, Harris Jr, and Roby.

Howard guy here......but I must say, I'm intrigued by this scenario and would welcome it. Plus, it would take away the top cb from Tennessee. Only thing is......I pray to God the Titans don't get Howard.

yeah i get that. but broncos also have von miller rushing the passer. Colvin is serviceable enough to play nickel. we don't need to go wasting a high draft pick (hopefully our last high draft pick in a while) on someone that is going to be covering the 3rd best receiver. And then come time, we won't resign both Ramsey and Lattimore

No one is taking a tight end top 5.

Not just 3rd receivers though. The battleredblog on Bouye's coming out party against Travis Kelce would be a good way a slot guy can be used. If say the Titans do get Howard or Njoku, Bouye or Lattimore sure would be helpful there.

I'm also not advocating Lattimore as my top guy...he's third. But I don't think Thomas will be there and I don't think Howard is going to be the pick ultimately either, so I would happily settle on my 3rd choice right now over what I think will happen in Fournette or Allen.

You do realize a lot of WR1s move inside? It's a passing league. We play in a division with TY Hilton, who the Colts regularly move inside. And our problem is that we keep saying guys are "serviceable". I would be all for turning something that is good into great for once, instead of saying good is enough all the time and trying to spread focus only for everything to fall apart because none of the positions are strong enough.

There IS actually a need at corner still because other than Ramsey and Bouye we have a big fat black hole at outside corner. You need 3 good outside corners in this league. If one of our other two guys go down we're pretty much screwed. Josh Johnson and Colvin are both slot guys. So drafting Lattimore makes sense from a needs perspective as well.

On the pass rushing point, we need to stop deluding ourselves into thinking all our secondary woes the pass couple years have been because the pass rush wasn't good enough. The Broncos pass rush this year was not nearly as good as it was in years past and their secondary was still shut down. Why? Because they have 3 probowl-caliber corners. The fact is we haven't had good enough players at corner up until last year year. If we have Ramsey, Lattimore, and Bouye the pass rush not being great won't matter, they will still shut down the secondary.

Finally, who cares about 4-5 years down the road? The good thing is that we will have options when that time comes. Who builds a team based on "well we won't be able to sign both in 5 years so let's not get a future probowl/all-pro player". Furthermore, depending on the position, whoever we draft at 4 may be even more expensive than Lattimore, if it's DL for example. So that point really has nothing to do with anything here.

I don't think a team has ever taken a corner who would be the third best on the team top 5 either

So no nickel corner at 4, no TE at 4, no RB at 4, no DL left and no OL worth the pick and safety and linebacker aren't a needs. Grrrrreat gotta pick somebody.

Forgive me for dredging up an old thread, but I don't know if you saw it or not.

Nahhh...because he also mentioned the other picks after that.
"Can't draft a tight end in the top 5"......"Can't draft a cb in the top 5"......"Can't draft a safety in the top 5"   Some say rb too. The nfl game is changing. And some will never think outside the box. A big part of this game is creating and defending mismatches. Coaches spend sleepless nights before gameday every week. There is huge value when you can draft a key piece of the offensive or defensive  puzzle whether it be Howard, Hooker, Latimore or Fournette.

Dave might want defense. Tom might want offense.
Two thoughts...

speed in general could be the thought at 4. Having 7 picks after could also point to moving around...

But what about the FS position... maybe he intends to upgrade that spot? (Hooker)

I don't think we pay AJ that contract to have him be the nickel.

DC is all about talking a lot before the draft though. I wouldn't try to break the code and figure it out.

Just enjoy.
