Quote:Ramsey wouldn't play SS. He is either a CB or a FS.
If we draft Ramsey, we will use him like Earl Thomas.
If you want to be really honest he's more of a box safety than a free safety. And him and Earl are no really comparable. Thomas is more of a rangy, ball hawking free safety, who can assist in the run but the latter is more of a Kam Chancellor duty.
Ramsey is a freakish athlete that could play either safety position in the NFL. As long as he's got the positional IQ necessary. Because he won't have any physical hindrance playing FS at a much higher level than Josh Evans. He'd be an immediate immediate upgrade, IMO.
The real question is whether he's worth the pick at 5.
I'm on the fence, but leaning toward liking the pick.
Starting him at SS? No thanks. We have two guys to fight for that spot.
Quote:That's debatable. Smith would struggle against guys like Kendall Wright but would match up well with Hopkins.
Sean Smith also played on a defense with a pass rush and competent safeties.

I see a guy with good size and length but I'm not sure if I see freakish athlete. Guess we'll see at the combine.

For sure. He'll be an interesting guy to watch. I think he'll impress.
Gonna' be fun to see how this whole class of safeties sorts out after the combine, because I really think Dave will select one before the fourth round.
Of cousre - I said that last year too

He won the ACC long jump title at the 2015 indoor and outdoor champinship, and his 10.61 in the 100-meter would have qualified for the Olympic trials if he choose to do so. Thats pretty freakish to me.
The current DB's are good enough to win a Super Bowl. We just need explosive pass rushers from the edges and replace the slow old LB.

One guy who sucks and a guy who hasn't started more than 2 games in the NFL... great!!

lol
It wouldn't be good because Ramsey is not a SS

Cyprien is in a contract year with his back against the wall and a younger player breathing down his neck. I think one of those two will end up being solid or better for the Jags at SS.
Here's the important part:
The FS position is a greater need by miles and miles. As is the pass rush.
If you want to add another SS to the mix (understandable) - it should be done
after addressing those two positions. I'd probably find a CB to play opposite House before addressing SS also.
But - I certainly wouldn't draft a guy at 5 that can upgrade FS and start him at SS. That's backasswards.
We can only dream : ( Ramsey is going to be picked already.
Quote:And for some reason, you think Dave is going to draft Ramsey to play SS when he has Cyp and Sample on the roster. Every inclination is they are going to give those two a chance at battling it out.
Also, I would much rather worry about fixing the front 7 then spending that many resources on the secondary. You fix the front 7, and the secondary will fall into place.
Cyprien who has done nothing but look inept the past 3 years and Sample who hasn't proved jack? He's staking his job on those guys and saying Ramsey, a far superior player to either, draft status depends on two guys who might not even be more than league back up material, if that? Yea sure.
Quote:This line of thought is like taking the stickers off of a Rubik's cube and never actually solving it.
But it makes more sense than drafting a SS at 5 when you have much greater needs.
Except Ramsey wouldn't only be a SS. Get position out of your head. Ramsey can play wherever they want him to in the secondary. It's like saying Tyrann Mathieu is only a free safety, or only a CB. He is not. He plays every position in the secondary. That's how Ramsey would be used. CB, safety, it doesn't matter where you put him he will be a good player.

draft history suggests he wont.

Dave isn't wasting a top 5 pick on a SS especially if he already signed Weddle and Smith.
Earl Thomas isn't just a rangy FS, he's extremely physical and a great tackler.
Ramsey isn't nearly stout enough to play SS in the league. He is a launcher and arm tackler, not someone who will wrap up and then run through a 230 pound running back. You see Cyprien getting run over by running backs and then imagine skinny Ramsey get eaten for lunch.
To answer the original question: I think it would be about league average.
It's not "Wasting" a pick to choose Ramsey. You're getting way too caught up in something as meaningless as what his listed position is. It doesn't matter. He will play every position in the secondary. Once Weddle retires he can take over at FS. When you're drafting Ramsey you're not looking at what specific position he is playing, you're looking at his versatility and the fact that he can be your long term solution at several spots in the secondary depending on your team's needs.

Ramsey can add 10 pounds on his frame easily. I'm not really concerned about that. As for his tackling form, I agree, that can be addressed though. There aren't a lot of guys who come out of college sure tacklers.

10.6 is a good time for men....in high school.
