Helluva cover corner and arguably the best defender in Jaguars history. It's unarguable that he was the best at his position in franchise history. Mathis was always humble and gave back to his community. With his retirement I thought it might be worthwhile to look back at his tenure here. I'll never forget his games against the Steelers.
I agree.  The defense hasn't had a true playmaker like Sheen since he left.  He would be a worthy candidate for the Pride.....after Jimmy, Keenan, and Coughlin.

While I agree there is a strong case for 'Shean to be in the Pride.

I don't think the organization plans to put him in there.

I am basing this on the fact that the #27 is still in circulation. The numbers that are out of circulation are 71, 8, 28, 82, 32.

Those numbers, I believe are the organizations hint of players eventually being inducted.

I would put Big John or Stroud in there over Sheen.  Heck, in his day Tony Brackens was an absolute monster and deserves it as well...but nobody remembers the defensive guys like they do the offense.  I like Shean and he was a great playmaker for a time, but Big John and Stroud created a lot of the havoc that caused those passes.

Not only that, but Keenan and Jimmy far surpass Mathis in a chance to make the Pride.

I agree with the overall sentiment that Rashean is a worthy candidate for inclusion into the Pride.

But your observation about the out of circulation numbers, taken at face value, is an interesting one.

Putting aside the fact a number could be removed from circulation, the numbers listed above begs the question of whether the deciders of who gets into the Pride have an offensive bias?

I would say Brackens, Mathis, Stroud, and Henderson have strong arguments for Pride membership.
Yes he should

I have noticed this as well. I am not quite sure how or why this has been taking place.

I must be honest, when Brackens was released, I HATED the fact that someone was able to wear his number. 55 sacks in 8 years is good. But not even close to HOF consideration maybe that's the reason. Or maybe its because the Pride wasn't even a "thing" when he was released.

As for Stroud and Henderson, see Brackens. And where would they be without each other though? (That's a hypothetical question for another time).

I'd say that with 30 INTs as a Jag, that is enough to be inducted. Maybe they take #27 out of circulation once Gratz is cut  :whistling:

Maybe they have a bias, we do not know. But it is definitely a curious question.

This team for the most part has always been known for offense more than defense.  Nobody on our defense has had absolute stellar careers.  Rashean, Brackens, Stroud, Henderson, Hardy, Poz, Darius, etc etc were all very good, but none were known league wide like the guys put into the Pride at this point.  With that said, I still disagree with one of the members of the Pride, but that has been discussed in the past.

This also boils down with how inclusive do you want to make the Pride?  is it someone every 2, 3, 5, 10 years?  Is MJD worthy?  If so you have to keep pushing other guys back.  In my opinion this team hasn't won enough to keep filling up space around the stadium.

We are setting a dangerous precedent if we are letting above average players into the Pride.  What if we become a consistently good team again and pipe dream, win a couple Super Bowls....how many of those guys will deserve to go in the Pride?  I think you need to develop some exclusivity.  If you're winning Super Bowls you are almost assured to have defensive players that will out perform many of the guys listed above.
They need to take the # factor out of it. Keep the numbers in circulation. Once a player is put into the Pride of the Jaguars allow it to be by name. They will still have their number attached to them no matter what.

Was Rashean's career really worthy of the distinction of retire his number forever level?  I'm not even trying to be disrespectful, that should be a very rare feat.  The only person on this team I would even consider it for at this point is Fred Taylor.
No he don't.

You must add Boselli to that
After reading Paul Posluszny's comments on Jaguars.Com about the intangibles Rashean Mathis provided the Jaguars,  combined with what Mathis provided the team on the field,  and that he's the first Jaguars player from the Jacksonville area to be amongst the best at his position over a long period of time,   it reinforces my opinion that Mathis deserves entry into the Jaguars Pride.  Tony Boselli is clearly the best Jaguars player from the team's first 21 seasons.   After Boselli though and possibly Fred Taylor,  at the very least Rashean Mathis ranks in the same sentence with the other top players from the team over the last two + decades.  That much more when everything is considered about players,  including what they provided in the locker room,  community,  and their dependability.

He's been retired for one day.

I totally agree 71 and 28! Best 2 Jaguars ever and both should get into Canton as well!

He would be in the conversation.  I've had the opinion for a long time though that fans too easily want to put players into the ring of honor.  I think putting their name on that piece of the stadium should be for players that were above and beyond what other players in the league were.  Fred Taylor and Boselli were, and the Weavers for what they brought to this city.  I thought Brunell was a product of the system and the players around him (obviously my opinion)...

If you want players to be talked about, the one at the top of the list should be Donovan Darius.  That guy was a stud for this team from day one.  He was a ball hawk, a hitter, and a leader.  There should be a part of the stadium where the Jags history is talked about and these players are recognized, but to put their name on that part of the stadium the players should be at another level....just an opinion.

Hes not in the conversation.

He IS the conversation.

I agree on Brunell. He didn't even get over 20 TD passes in a season. IDC about the different era talk.

I think if there is one person up there that doesn't need to be, its definitely Brunell.
I think he's in the running for sure. I'd definitely get him in eventually.

Right now its Boselli, Weavers, Taylor, and Brunell?  I think eventually Mathis and MJD get in.  I'd love to see Jimmy get there but he's had some issues off the field that may hold him back.

To illustrate just how bad this would make us look (Rashean in the Pride), Terrance Newman for the Cowboys had 40 career interceptions.

JUST FREAKING IMAGINE THE COWBOYS PLACING TERRANCE NEWMAN IN THEIR RING OF HONOR.

Heck, Mike Prior had 35 interceptions .... who's he ?  exactly.

While I like to disregard the length of his career, this chart really makes the duration really stand out.  While I believe he was a better player than Orlando Pace, there's something to be said about lasting 169 regular season games instead of just 91
