Quote:LOL at people who continue to claim Gus inherited a team that was basically worthless. The team he inherited was 5-11 under Del Rio for Pete's sake. Three years later and a complete turnover orchestrated by this guy and we're 5-11 still. How is that headed in the right direction?

I'm pretty sure he inherited a 2-14 team from Mike Mularkey. I know the Mularkey era was pretty forgettable, but....

I'm pretty sure you're technically correct, nonetheless the personnel Gus thought was useless was pretty much what Del Rio had.

yes, the team is better, and if Marks and Fowler played this season the defense would be better. Next year is the prove I'm right year, if he fails then my vote changes.
also a handful of the games this year we should have won. The fact we did as well as we did without a rushing game is amazing in itself

Well apparently the horse is not quite dead yet, so the beatings will continue.
HA! Straight up. If the sorry [BLEEP] horse was dead we'd be talking about a new head coach taking over.

You bring up an interesting question: just how much input did Gus have in 2013 as to which existing players to keep, and which to cut or otherwise allow to leave. If Caldwell was 100% responsible for those decisions then Gus didn't have JDR's roster.
I voted "Yes" due to the wording of the question.
Am I happy with what I see on the field? No. Not really.
However, I also remember what the team looked like under Mularkey, and under Gus year 1 and year 2. What we saw on the field this year was light years better.
It didn't result in as many wins as we ALL would have hoped, however, to say that the team hasn't drastically improved would simply be fooling ones self.
The team HAS improved under Gus and Dave. Maybe not year 1, when they blew the whole thing up a mere year after Gene blew it up, leaving us with one of the youngest and most talent starved rosters EVER. But this year the difference was OBVIOUS.
I don't know that this year was ENOUGH of an improvement to warrant keeping Gus. I don't really know how much of the improvement can even be CREDITED to Gus (as opposed to Dave simply adding significantly better talent).
What I DO know, is that the arrow is pointing up. I know that the team improved this year over last. That's the right direction.
The question, is speed. How SOON can we go from "improving" to "Good" or higher?
Quote:Well you could just start a "Sunshine and Rainbows " thread about how bright the Jag's future looks going forward under HC Gus Bradley.
That should be an interesting thread and you could list all the reasons why Gus is leading the Jags in the right direction.
Surely we could use some positive Gus threads around here to counter those 1497 "I hate Gus" threads.
I plan to. I'll wait until free agency and the draft tho so it will be easier to see what's about to happen with this team. And yes I'm very happy with the direction of this franchise under the current leadership. I expect a big jump next year and for Gus and Dave to be here for the long run. It's extremely exciting to think of this offense (another offseason to gel, improve within the system) coupled with a stout defense. We are already great against the run, but once we fix the pas rush, look out. This team will be everyone's favorite dark horse candidate for a playoff run. All you'll have to do is look at the roster. Plus we will actually have some depth for this first time in 4 years to supplement the higher level of play. Very exciting time to be a Jags fan!

No, the OFFENSE was light years ahead. The defense (Gus' specialty) was same ol' same ol'.

With essentially the same D as last year, minus Marks and an older Clemons.
Coupled with the injured replacements (Fowler, Sample)
-shrug-
whatever though.

34 yr old Chris Clemons or Khalil Mack. What's the difference? Just win baby!
.../s
Injuries on defense coupled with personnel that are incapable of achieving a consistant pass rush.. Yup, it's all Gus' fault. Al Gore recently divulged his new theory that Global Warming is his fault too.
12 wins is pretty impressive. I had a 4.0 in college.
Of course it took 3 semesters added together.........
Watching the playoffs, I started to get a better understanding of how long it can take to build a team through the draft. I was watching these teams, and I was curious about some of the players, how long they had been in the league, so I googled a few at random. Like one play, the Steelers' Lawrence Timmons made a tackle, so I said, who is this guy, how long has he been in the league, and found out he was drafted in 2007.
I am realizing that if you draft well, and get just 2 or 3 core players each draft, you can still be on an upward trend after 5, 6, 7 years. If you're drafting players that you expect to be on the team 7, 8, 9 years, then the building process can go on for a very very long time.
So for us to expect the Jags to become contenders in 3 years, with the plan they have in place, tearing everything up and starting over and building through the draft, was probably asking too much. Way too much. The way we are doing it, we shouldn't be even starting to reach a peak level of team talent for another 2 or 3 years from now. By that time, some of these guys will be in their second contracts, and that's why we have to stay way under the salary cap for now and carry over as much money as possible.
It takes incredible patience and a very long range view, and it's understandable the Jags would not try to sell the fans on waiting 4 or 5 years before we had a contender. No one would buy tickets. So the fans are a little bit in the dark about the plan, and that's the reason for the frustration.

I have felt this was what was happening.
Don't use toooooo much common sense, some members may not use it enough to understand your assessment. Good post, though i've felt this way from the jump; but as one poster's signature reads....You can't win an argument with --- because they'll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. Lol

All of those teams also had at least average to above average head coaches, which is what this Fan Survey Poll thread is really asking about Gus.
Say and think what you want to about BOB and the tinhorns, but he did lead the tinhorns to the AFCS title this year using 4 starting Qbs and getting pretty much nothing from their #1 overall pick (Clowney) from the 2014 draft, while the Jags got a Jaguars record breaking year from Bortles, yet finished the year 5-11.
Yeah, they absolutely got destroyed in the playoffs because their lack of a real QB showed up, but they did manage to win the division with that "lack of a real QB" and a pretty good defense and at least average head coaching.
The same thing pretty much goes for Gruden and the Redskins too. He took advantage of a weak division and won it using a QB picked in the 4th rd. and moving on from RGlll who was picked #2 in that very same 2012 draft and at least average head coaching.
They even had a lead against the Packers in their playoff game this year before GB woke up and became GB again and beat them.
I like Gus and hope he succeeds here, but unfortunately I haven't seen anything in his 3 years here to tell me that he is going to be a great HC and lead the Jags to playoff wins or at least 1 playoff win and go from there.
2016 is going to be a big year for Gus as far as is he the right HC to lead the Jaguars going forward.
He will have Dante Fowler back (Marks too) and a top 5 pick in the NFL draft (provided they don't trade it away) so next years team should be an improvement over this years team, and NOT just on paper.
Come on Gus, find a way to lead the Jaguars into a much improved team in 2016 and let's win the AFCS title, or at least find a way to make it into the playoffs.
Quote:May be a little misleading question.
I feel the same way you are about "losing faith".
It may be a mistake but I voted yes just because I think he can get us to 6 wins lol. Which technically would still be considered an improvement.
If you would have asked, "Do you think Bradley can lead us to the playoffs? or Can Bradley coach this team to be a contender?" I would have said NO!
However if Gus goes 7-9 or 6-10 next year, he can certainly argue "PROGRESS" LOL
Now, with that being said, I feel like we may be capped out with Bradley, meaning i don't think he take take us very far.
Its playoffs or bust time Gus! Get your [BAD WORD REMOVED] together!
This is what I think at this point. This team is clearly improving, but is it gonna be playoff level next year? I don't think so, and I think its fair to expect the team to make the playoffs at this point. Unless our division suddenly becomes much better and we miss the playoffs with a winning record, I think Gus will be gone. I don't think 8-8 is enough without playoffs. If you get 9-7, I think at that point you have to think about letting him stay on, playoffs or not.

To quote the old guy, I wouldn't worry about that.
