Clearly there are varying philosophies on selecting RBs in the draft and which are worthy of being selected in various rounds.
I've long maintained waiting until round 3 or later for a running back, unless convinced a one of a kind prospect is there early and your team is largely "built" elsewhere.
Fournette and Cook will make these decisions interesting in the 2017 draft as both are viewed as rare talents by many and deemed worthy of top ten selection by most.
Where do you land on the value of the RB in the draft? Do you want to gamble with an early first round pick, or try to mine value in a later round?
For example:
I remember in 2015 liking the idea of prospects such as Langford and Ajayi in the third round or later (and we of course used a second rounder on Yeldon.)
This year I lean toward guys like Perrine, Foreman or McGuire later in the draft -- though I'd still be pretty excited about Fournette or Cook in the first round if the FO makes that call.
I would PREFER round 2-3. Though I'd certainly be happy with Fournette/Cook in the first. Depends on who's there at our pick. I wouldn't take one of Garret fell, but I'm not a big Safety at #4 fan.
But it's really hard to screw up the pick this year. There are so many good options we could select.
Round 2. And hopefully it's McCaffrey.
We reached for T.J. Yeldon. I remember a lot of people said this when he was drafted. This year, a deep RB class allows us to upgrade the position in Round 2 if we don't pick Leonard Fournette or Dalvin Cook.
This question naturally leads to another one: Is an elite RB worth passing on an elite DB? At #4, SS Jamal Adams and/or CB Marshon Lattimore should be available.
Yes, We had a top 10 defense and won less then 5 games.
No safety would make it better, With hardly any pass rush.
Lattimore wouldn't play worlds better than prince did.
So yes either running back in Cook or Younger Ivory. Would do more because eats up clock.
And t.o.p. matters and decides games. And also rb score points while eating up clock.
If I knew for a fact I could get mixon in the third or later, I probably wouldn't even consider fournette or cook.
There seem to be a lot of decent backs in this draft but only 3 or maybe 4 that look like they'll be NFL feature backs.
We need a feature back, we have decent right now in yeldon and it's just not good enough.
I gotta see how the draft goes and whose on the board, before I make such a decision.

Why? His decision is basically who is BAP. If Myles Garrett is at 4, you take him without hesitation. But it's a toss up between a Safety or RB at 4. Both are
generally reach picks that high.
It all depends how those first 3 go and if we get trade offers.

3rd or 4th round. A mock that just had us taking Fournette at 4 said it very well, "Fournette or Cook at 4 will help get the Jags out of the AFC celler, but admittedly not to the penthouse."
That's the crux of it to me. Do you want to compete for a super bowl eventually, or do you want to just not be bad? If you want to just not be bad fine take RB at 4, they will help us not be bad.
If you want to compete for a super bowl sometime soon then take Allen, Thomas, Adams, or Lattimore.
Thankfully, we draft every year and not just this year. There's no one player to draft at 4, especially not a S, that will take us to the penthouse.
I don't see how we can't come away with a RB in rounds 1-4, but then Dave has surprised me before in not addressing needs.
I'd prefer a RB in the 3rd or later. BUT, it'd be hard to not pick Cook or Fournette if the choice is one of them or a safety.

Usually 3 or 4 - but I really want Cook.

So far, all reports seem to favor Fournette unless a team wants a RB who catches passes in the backfield. Fournette's NFL comparison is Adrian Peterson. In one article, I read the most important thing Fournette needs to do at the combine is show he can be like Cook as a pass catcher.

Absolutely, I like both players a lot but Cook just edges it for me.

I don't think he will fall to #32. Seattle drafted a RB last year, so I don't see them wanting McCaffrey. Detroit is a team to watch out for.
Bring in a couple of undrafted guys, sign a cheap RB, roll with Ivory, Yeldon, and Grant again.
