Quote:You made the comparison to minimum wage lol. I agree you can't compare them but you threw the term sub minimum wage in there and that's not how it works at all. If the guy made $28 a day he only worked about an hour to get it. That's still not even close to minimum wage and I don't understand where you're going with that example.

You're talking about small owner operators annnnnnnnnnnnd making an appeal to authority at the same time.

All those examples you threw out could technically exist I guess but I'd consider those circumstances so rare as to not even be relevant to the discussion. And I've never seen a sales contract that stipulates prices based on fuel costs in my life. It's somewhat common in a mechanical harvesting contract but not a sales contract. Maybe they do it differently wherever it was your grandfather farms but I think to put the term "most" on it is a stretch.
you must not be considering the thousands of owner operater farmers who work their own land until harvest time and then bring in temp labor...You have never obviously had to hire temp labor...Illegals routinley work for less than minimum wage for cash under the table, and they work from sun up to sun down...They end up with a good chnk of change per day and they work the harvests and go back home and live like kings in Mexico for the winter...The problem is so bad in Idaho, they have set up labor camps so undocumented farm workers have housing during the growing and harvesting months, and then they shut them down for the winter

Quote:so you have never seen a price increase during the pricing agreement? everytime the price goes up it's a new price agreement? BULL [BAD WORD REMOVED]

If the price continually changes then what exactly would be the point of a "pricing agreement" i.e. a contract? That's complete nonsense. I'm sorry but no, you (the grower) don't have the option of changing the price after signing a sales contract.

The only thing that's even comparable to that is when dealing with non-perishable crops that can be stored and sold based on market fluctuations.

No actually, I think I am considering the thousands of owner operator farmers who work their own land being that not only am I one, and also surrounded by the same thing (by literally thousands btw) because I live and operate a farming business in the farming capitol of the world. Can you say the same?

It's really kind of laughable that you think your 2nd or 3rd hand knowledge trumps my lifetime of first hand knowledge in a community more farming-centric than you've probably ever been exposed to in your life. Farming is a $42 billion dollar industry in Ca, and I live in the #1 county within the state in terms of agribusiness. The two largest crops are vineyard and almonds, both of which I grow.

I have active contracts with Sun-Maid Rasins <a class="bbc_url" href='http://www.sunmaid.com'>http://www.sunmaid.com</a> as well as The Almond Company <a class="bbc_url" href='http://www.thealmondcompany.com.'>http://www.thealmondcompany.com.</a> I deal with the National Resources Conservation Service <a class="bbc_url" href='http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/site/national/home/'>http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/site/national/home/</a> and I'm a committee member of CARCD <a class="bbc_url" href='http://www.carcd.org/home0.aspx'>http://www.carcd.org/home0.aspx</a>

I'm also a member of Allied Grape Growers <a class="bbc_url" href='http://alliedgrapegrowers.org'>http://alliedgrapegrowers.org</a> and the San Joaquin Winegrowers Association <a class="bbc_url" href='http://www.idrinkwine.net.'>http://www.idrinkwine.net.</a>

At some point I think you need to stop and realize that I might know a little more about how the industry works than you do.
Quote:I gotcha now...I wish I had enough time and room to grow everything I eat and make a living as well...Even to just supplement my income would be nice but I don't have the time or the room to do anything like that

This year hasn't been so great, it's been hot and dry so lots of my fruits cracked. I was just in my watermelon bed yesterday broke my heart my best watermelon completely wasted.

I do most of my work this time in the morning since my new job I'm at work 9-7 six days a week. The summers nice because even if I'm home at 8 I can still get some work done for an hour. The wife helps a lot and the kids all have small chores that help, mostly collecting eggs and feeding the chickens.

My one day off is always consumed by the property but honestly I enjoy most of it. There are some days id rather just be lazy but you gotta use your time wisely.

As for space I started growing tons of food when we still rented in the suburbs. Build a raise bed I did 3 12x4 and you'd be surprised how much food we got out of it. I think the first year we did potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants. Start small it's rewarding you might even one day say screw it move out to the boonies with me and have at it!
Honestly, why would you put National Guard on the border instead of just hiring more Border Patrol Agents. The National Guard is mostly ineffective and doesn't have even remotely close to the training a Border Patrol Agent has in the field. And that is not even mentioning the lack of arrest authority.

CBP has had Blackhawks before, but they were mostly phased out.
