Troy Polamalu decides to retire after 12-year career

#21

Quote:I wouldn't call him "over rated" by any means.  After watching him play I would say that he is/was a "better Donovan Darius".

With the toll that he has placed on his body, I am somewhat happy to see him retire.  Hopefully the concussions/injuries that he had don't have long term effects on him.
Thats the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. Darius was a HITTER. Troy was an ankle tackler.

Darius was a liability in coverage. Troy had good ball skills and did a lot of guessing on the back end.

Quote:Yeah, I'm not getting it either.

Guy had incredible consistency, especially in his earlier years.  He won a game for the Steelers by intercepting the ball, one-handed, by the slimmest margin and then ran it in for a TD.  I couldn't remember which team he did it against, so I tried youtubing it and came up with this gem:

Not included: his pick 6 to beat the Ravens and advance to the AFC championship In 2008/2009 season, and eventually SB 43.  Which they won, unfortunately.

Not impressed with INTs?

How about sacks, or fumble recoveries.

Consistently getting juked or rerouted by receivers.

He made big plays don't get me wrong, but to say his play was consistent is ridiculous.

And what if I told you that Polumalu was almost twice as productive as Darius.

By the way, I hate the Steelers, and in particular, their fans, and happen to like Donovin very much.

But the stats don't lie:

That has nothing to do with Polamalu.

Quote:Troy Polamalu wasn't as consistent as some of the top Safeties of the last 40 years but he was a tremendous play maker.  I recall a playoff game in Cincinnati in which Polamalu was the most differential player.      Including,  an interception that belongs on any all time highlight reel.   That game helped propel the Steelers on the path to an eventual Super Bowl Championship a few weeks later.

This I can agree with.  He was a hit or miss type of guy.  Either he was going to make a huge play or he was going to let something big happen to them.

I always look at Hall of Fame players now by saying would he be a hall of famer if he was a Jacksonville Jaguar?  If Polamalu was a Jaguar, I'm not so sure he would make it in this market.

My take is if the Jaguars continued to perform on the level that they did in the 2007 season in which they beat the Steelers on the road twice,  including in a thrilling playoff win,  and gave the then unbeaten Patriots a heck of a battle in the 2nd round of the playoffs,   the Jaguars would have already been a much higher national profile team.  The 7 straight non winning seasons probably would have made extremely difficult for Troy Polamalu to get enough national recognition for his playmaking skills.   Granted,  with Polamalu,  the Jaguars probably would have won a handful of more games over the years.  But probably not enough to get the team enough national exposure to get Polamalu the type of recognition one usually needs to get into the HOF.

I never said Darius was better. Because he wasn't. I was pointing out the "hard hitter" attribute.

I fail to see how that's relevant. Polamalu isn't either.

Exactly.

Peter King touches on if Polamalu should be inducted in the HoF in his MMQB:

He will be inducted.

I don't think he should be.

He was just fortunate to go the right team at the right time.
