Troy Polamalu decides to retire after 12-year career

Troy Polamalu decides to retire after 12-year career Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and former Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year, announced he was retiring in an interview with the Herald-Standard. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl.../25557831/ ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. One of the most overrated players of All time.
Made a career under false pretenses as a "big hitter" when in reality whiffing at shoestring tackles was his specialty. Did have a knack for making game changing/clinching INTs/sacks however.

Best of luck to Troy and his family. I wouldn't say that he's one of the "best DB's" to ever play the game, but he made big time plays in big game situations and that's all that matters.
Love him or hate him he could get it done when it needed to be done. I'll miss seeing him on the field. Hopefully he'll still make the Head and Shoulders commercials. I think they're awesome.

He took too many gambles and missed on a lot...of course he would have hit on a few.
Should have retired two years ago.
Has Ed Reed officially retired yet? It ctazy how some players dont retire because they still think they have a chance to play. I dont think TO or Randy Moss has officially reired either lol
Polamalu was extremely overrated.
Some think he is a surefire Hall of Famer. But did he have a better career than Leroy Butler, Steve Atwater or Carnell Lake? I don't think so and none of those three have gotten close to getting in.

I came into this thread thinking that everyone would be all over this guy's jock as one of the greatest ever...I'm glad I was wrong. Good player, but extremely overrated.
Give me Ed Reed any day over this guy. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
The way ESPN treated his retirement, you'd think that Michael Jordan was hanging it up. Not one of the most overrated, overhyped players of his generation.

Why is this thread so disrespectful? Lots of jealousy as he would have been the best defender jags ever had

Troy Polamalu wasn't as consistent as some of the top Safeties of the last 40 years but he was a tremendous play maker. I recall a playoff game in Cincinnati in which Polamalu was the most differential player. Including, an interception that belongs on any all time highlight reel. That game helped propel the Steelers on the path to an eventual Super Bowl Championship a few weeks later.

Quote:Why is this thread so disrespectful? Lots of jealousy as he would have been the best defender jags ever hadYeah, I'm not getting it either. Guy had incredible consistency, especially in his earlier years. He won a game for the Steelers by intercepting the ball, one-handed, by the slimmest margin and then ran it in for a TD. I couldn't remember which team he did it against, so I tried youtubing it and came up with this gem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQgIrCN2dHE Not included: his pick 6 to beat the Ravens and advance to the AFC championship In 2008/2009 season, and eventually SB 43. Which they won, unfortunately. Not impressed with INTs? How about sacks, or fumble recoveries. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtTdHYeWMjA Quote:Yeah, I'm not getting it either. It seemed like Troy Polamalu had a high proportion of his big plays against AFC North opponents. Especially, the Bengals and Ravens. Which is a good thing. Most of the Steelers-Ravens games before 2014 were decided in the last couple of minutes of the game. W/o Polamalu, the Ravens would have probably won multiple more games against the Steelers than they did.
I wouldn't call him "over rated" by any means. After watching him play I would say that he is/was a "better Donovan Darius".
With the toll that he has placed on his body, I am somewhat happy to see him retire. Hopefully the concussions/injuries that he had don't have long term effects on him. There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't. |
