Jags predicted "under the radar" to make playoffs

Quote:IMO, Henne's problem more than the mistakes is that when he's in there the defense can cheat and only really has to defend (focus on) a small part of the field because he's such a dink and dunker.

It's about equal to me.  The guy throws too many INTS, fumbles too often and has far too many balls batted down.

1-1 going into the Indy game where Bortles and Luck go head to head and Bortles edges him out with a game winning drive! Crowd goes wild and the video boards explode !!!!

That's a given, and we'll see soon enough whether that thinking is correct or not.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I don't think it matters one way or the other.

Meh, I think folks focus too much on his first half of last season and perhaps hold that impression (to a fault.)

He was pretty efficient the second half of the year, and has pleased the coaches so far with his efficiency in the system.

He's certainly not the hot garbage we've had in the past.  Going by the numbers, he's got us back to the Garrard years prior to his tanking.  Yes, we deserve better than that.  But that's taken care of, too as Bortles is the guy of the future.

I have zero doubt it's possible Henne could get this team into the playoffs with our division as bad as it is.  Worse QBs have.  Does that necessarily make us contenders?  No.  But it does bode well for the next few years, when we'll probably be labeled contenders as early as next year.

Quote:It was relatively late in the 1998 season...the week before the Jaguars clinched the division.

I remember being upset with Coughlin because Brunell got injured on a play where the protection called for Pete Mitchell-NOT a blocking TE-to slide over and block the Lions' DE (I want to say Robert Porcher).  Brunell hurt his ankle on the play and missed the next game or two.

The game was indeed relatively late in the 1998 season.   It was the Lions first game after the Thankigiving Day OT win over the Steelers that many Steelers still talk about because of the OT coin toss controversy.

The specific play you mentioned is something I forgot about until reading your post.

What stood out for me that day was despite the impact Barry Sanders had,   Fred Taylor was sensational.    It was difficult watching the Lions Defense get carved up but when watching Taylor,   I knew I was viewing football greatness.     Even with the injuries,   Taylor had a borderline HOF career.   Early in his career,   Taylor was destined to be a 1st or 2nd ballot HOFer if he could have stayed relatively healthy the vast majority of the time.

Also,   Tony Boselli was sidelined with an injury that afternoon.   Ben Coleman moved to LT and performed very well all things considering.

Efficient by his standards maybe but not by starting QB standards.  My count has him with 10 TDs and 9 INTs the last half.  Yes that's the majority of his TDs but that's also the majority of his INTs.  He had the same completion percentage in half 1 and half 2, barely 60%.

He averaged more yards a game in the first half of the season.

He was consistently poor throughout the season.  He had a few highs in areas followed by lows.  He's been that way for years and he's not suddenly going to change now barring some miracle.  Henne is what he is, a solid backup QB.

How is Henne any better than what we've had?  You could argue Gabbert but other than that?  He's at best equal but I would take David Garrard over Chad Henne any day.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have any problem with Chad and appreciate him here.  However he's simply being asked to do more than he's capable of doing well.  He's a guy that fits being on the bench, in the meeting rooms, as a backup QB.  Which he will be here soon enough.

I don't care what way you slice it, Henne is not a good starting QB.  Numbers or otherwise.

Yes...Taylor was amazing that game.

One of the things that struck me about how little exposure the Jaguars received nation wide was in the aftermath of that game, many Lions fans were dismayed that an "unknown" back like Fred Taylor could have that amount of success vs. the Lions.  Here he was, a rookie FIRST round, top ten draft pick on a playoff team on the way to 17 TDs, and more than 3/4 of the season past, and people still never heard of him.

As for Coleman, he gave us lots of quality play at LT in Boselli's stead over the years.  He shut down some great pass rushers, including Derrick Thomas, Jason Taylor and Jevon Kearse.

Hosting Miami and Tampa for the first time (and both of them were playoff caliber teams) was an absolute blast, and to this day rank as some of the most exciting atmospheres I've ever experienced at the stadium.

When Fred Taylor broke off the long run to beat Tampa, it was the loudest I heard that stadium for a long time.

Absolutely.

For me, that ranks in the top 3 home games in Jaguars history.

There were big plays and dramatic momentum shifts, a great crowd, great weather and two contending teams.

Heck...I just may pop in that DVD for a rewatch.

If we're 1 or 2 games out of a wildcard spot in December, I would consider that a success.

Quote:I couldn't bring myself to watch.

I was at the top of the stadium, looking over the side, rationalizing to myself and another guy that 8-8 is a good record for a 2nd year team...yada yada yada and trying to dampen the disappointment sure to come.

Then complete pandemonium.

Jubilation.

Numbness and amazement walking down the ramps as people tried figuring out how Morten missed and thankful he did.

It's been a great 20 years...and just imagine what it will be like to raise a championship banner or five in the stadium.

Same here.  We were in section 123 and I was sitting down staring at my feet.  Everyone around me was standing up because I guess I was the only one who knew Morten Andersen *never* misses on what was for him, a routine chip shot.  Guess the joke was on me, haha.

I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

It's funny.  I remember that kick like it was yesterday, and that's almost 20 years ago already.

Ahhhh, you and D6 just jarred my memory now....

Thats right - Fred had like over 180 yards rushing that game, didn't he??

I'll never forget that run....so good, so clutch. Game winner.

I'm not sure I ever remember a long TD run like that one to win a game before in that scenario (down by more than a FG, clock winding down, and the TD run itself being 60- plus.
