Goodell isn't part of the cap formula, but Goodell has the power to implement/ hold in the reins capwise if he & the ownership wished. 

 

The cap going up helps the teams that are already good right now and wish to not lose their stud players in FA. It doesn't help the teams in the Jaguars position at all. 

 

I guess I disagree...

 

Partly because I didn't want to spend on Greg Hardy in regards to the current defense we have in place.  We would have had to pony up a large amount of cash for the guy.  It would have been a bad move in my opinion and one that I don't think Caldwell would have made in the first place.  I never thought Greg Hardy would be here regardless.

 

Dave and the Jaguars need to continue to build through the draft, hitting on as many picks as they can, while doing due diligence and signing several key free agents.  They don't have to be break the bank moves either and I don't foresee the bulk of our FA money being spent on defense.  I fully expect Caldwell to spend money on interior OL.  I see that as a weak point in this draft and there should be a couple available that would fill the void inside.

I understand the above - however you can also add to the above with a stud free agent here and there. Its not a bad thing.  As long as you don't fall into the trap of depending on signing multiple expensive FA's every year, the team will be fiscally fine.

Agreed.  Byrd would be a guy I would be OK with paying for.  He's more a position of need than Greg Hardy.

 

Guys like center Evan Dietrich-Smith of Green Bay (unless he has signed a deal with them and I missed it) and Asomoah would be more likely here.  I like Dietrich-Smith and Aaron Rodgers has been an advocate for him to come back to Green Bay but I haven't seen anywhere where they have got a deal worked out with him.  Alex Mack would be a nice grab too of course but I'm not convinced he makes it to FA.

Its interesting...I was going back and forth about the viability of spending a lot of money on a Center like Mack, thinking the Center position might not be one to spend big on....but in todays offenses where you need smart, top notch players there to make correct line calls, and be the leader of the group maybe its more important than in time's past. The Eagles paid a good deal of coin for Jason Kelce, and pretty much utilized a similar line of thinking.
