Why is he on the roster?

#81

Usually the backup QB is the most popular guy on the field because people don't understand why he isn't #1. In our case, we know exactly why he isn't #1.

As for Kaepernick, I think you have to ask him if he really wants to play or not. Judging by his twitter, he seems more engaged in his activism than anything football related. The other options out there don't seem very viable. I think the Jags are going all in on this Bortles train 1 more time because it looks better than the alternatives, if it fails, we're drafting qb in the 1st once again.

Spot on. Dude never progressed as a qb.  He's not very good. His other stuff just seals the deal.

Unless the FO were convinced we could be made better by a trade, we've got the best available for us this year on the roster in Blake Bortles.

Kaepernick played way better than Gabbert last year.  (I'll throw Bortles in the stats too)

Completion Percentage:
Kaepernick: 59.2%
Bortles: 58.9%
Gabbert: 56.9%

TD Percentage:
KaepernicK: 4.8%
Bortles: 3.7%
Gabbert: 3.1%

Int Percentage:
Kaepernick: 1.2%
Bortles: 2.6%
Gabbert: 3.8%

Yards per game:
Bortles: 244.1
Kaepernick: 186.8
Gabbert: 154.2

Yards per attempt:
Kaepernick: 6.8
Bortles: 6.2
Gabbert: 5.8

Sack Percentage: (The only category where Gabbert beats Kaepernick)
Bortles: 5.2
Gabbert: 6.4
Kaepernick: 9.8

He's far from great.  But he's also not worse than Gabbert.

Kap is by no means "the future" for any team. He does a lot more with his legs than most #2 QBs out there. I drew the comparison as Henne seems to be primarily hit his check down or tuck and run. I would trust Kap to do what Henne typically does better than Henne.

Blake has clearly been the #1 throughout camp. Neither Henne nor Allen are playing as well as he is right now. But it's a lot closer to 2A and 2B than it is to 2 and 3. Hoping Marrone hasn't set the depth chart in stone.
Only a chump boos the home team!

It's probably a combo of them not wanting to cut Henne in a critical season for Blake ( as dumb as that sounds) and them also wanting to hang a carrot stick in front of Allen.

I wonder if any other team's fan base has ever demonstrated so much angst about a backup QB?
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

Political crap aside, Kaep's biggest problem is that an offense needs to be tailored to his skill set.  Nobody wants to be concerned with customizing their offense for a backup QB.
He would be a good fit in Carolina or Seattle.  I'm not sure he fits anywhere else.

As far as Henne goes, the narrative on him a few years ago was that he could be good if surrounded with talent.  He was promptly handed a team with 8 or 9 rookie and second year players on offense.  The team is significantly better all around now, but after 3 years of clipboard holding, how could he be improved?

We all know that Kaepernick's actions last season were divisive.  We don't need to hash that out in the Henne thread.

Thank you in advance for playing nice moving forward.

Agreed and I apologize for my previous comment.

^^^^ This is how I feel when....

1. Hearing we signed Henne to an extension.
2. Hearing that Henne is still on the roster.
3. Hearing that BA isnt ready yet, and that Henne will be the next man up if Blake falters.
