Dareus to Jags

We're not spending money to load the roster with talent to turn the reigns over to a rookie. I think we'll sign Blake to a 2 year deal at years end at around $12 Million per year, and maybe draft a QB in the mid rounds. If you ever listen to DOUG talk about Blake, you can easily tell that he likes what Blake's doing, and believes he can be the guy. Barring a complete collapse this year, he'll be the starter next year. I think that's very possible but I wouldn't be surprised at all if they did cut him, drafted a rookie and brought in a vet to start in the short term. It will depend on how he performs the rest of this season.
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

We are just mentioning him in this thread because his 2018 salary is $19 million. I always said we will pay it and keep him as the starter next season, reason being we would not have picked up the option if there was any doubt about his ability to lead the team to the playoffs. For the purpose of this thread, I think letting him walk in 2019 will let us keep Marcell Dareus un5til his contract expires in 2021.

Because the 6th round pick we traded becomes a 5th round pick if certain events take place, and as I vaguely recall, they are pretty likely things, like him being on the roster March 1, or something like that. I think the Bills saw Dareus as bad for the locker room, that his contract was an issue, and that the Bills are accumulating draft picks. Dareus having two substance abuse strikes was surely part of the decision as well.

I had a barroom conversation the other night about this with a guy who said that everyone assumes the cap will rise every year but that this year it may actually fall. I was very surprised when I walked into the 'bank for the Rams game and saw all the empty seats in the East side upper deck. Winning may well cure or mitigate it but it's a valid concern, at least in Jacksonville.

This move is to help the run defense. But he seems to be a player in full decline so I hope we don't get burnt in the long run. But maybe this move will help rejuvenate him. Also he will no longer be getting guaranteed money after the 2018 season so he may essentially be a 2 year and done guy with us.

That way the team can keep or cut him based on his performance or have him even be a backup for a few seasons of a worthwhile QB falls to us or comes open in free agency. Assuming Bortles doesn't come on strong to end this season, that is. If he does that they'll have to probably pay him. Colvin may get prove-it starter offers. I see a guy like Buster Skrine with a $8.5 mil cap hit this year and I have to think Colvin will command at least as much. Sean Smith signed a 4-year contract with the Raiders this past season averaging $9.5 mil per year while their other CB David Amerson signed for right about $8.5 mil per year. The mid-tier range for QBs is $8 to $10 mil. The top CBs are making $12 to $16 mil per.

He is playing well enough that we are winning games. I’ll take that. I can see a very likely scenario where we restrict his deal to free up some cap space and maybe draft a qb in the second or third round. Blake remains the starter while we develop a guy for a few years. The other draft picks go almost exclusively to the offense like a tight end, guards and a value speed receiver like a Ty Hill type of player. This team is set up nice with tons of young talent and just enough vets to get you through the tough times. They are clearly not sitting on their hands. They are ready to run this division and make some noise in the playoffs if the can get there.

I believe we'll sign a free agent QB as a transition type guy until the rookie is ready. Someone more consistent a trustworthy than Bortles. It's just not ideal because they could wait one more season and Abry would have zero dead money. For that extra $500,000 next year we might as well hang onto him.

Apparently you were not aware Rex Ryan ruined Marcell Dareus by switching to a 3-4 scheme with 4-3 personnel. Dareus was not the only one. Buffalo's defense got worse due to its scheme change that should not have happened.

We can cut guys like Poz, Ivory, Marcedes, and maybe even Parnell and save ~$20 mil then we have to figure out what to do with Arob, Lee, and Colvin. They will obviously take much more than that to keep so we're definitely going to lose some of them if not all 3. And then we have to figure out what to do at QB, TE, WR, SLB, and at least one starting caliber OG/RT...it's going to take some creativity like I said.[BLEEP] and Lewis you can't cut because their not under contract next year Poz is hitting free agency after the season which is why I'm advocating trading him now before the deadline to a team that can use him to get over the top like the Packers or Patriots. Lewis has one more year in the books. If they cut him before March they could save his entire $3.75 mil cap hit for 2018... or they can pay him $250,000 in March allowing them to make a decision later on. If they cut him after March 1 (or whenever his option bonus is due) but before the season starts, they still save the remaining $3.5 mil.

I think Dareus is going to work out great for us. Don't you worry about $$$ either. Bortles, ivory, malik....are just 3 guys that could be cut to save money. I think those 3 guys right there are somewhere around 35 million. The front office knows what they're doing.
