Griff's QB Mid-Season Rankings
|
My gut feeling at the moment is that Mayfield and Jackson will be taken in the top 15 picks or so and that Rosen or Rudolph will be the guys we target.
I'm still not a fan of Rudolph but I could see us taking him, even if we have to move up. We've been at every OK state game this year. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Rudolph scares me so much. I rewatch that one dude's ~120 throw clips of Rudolph and he is so subpar when he is pressured or has to go away from his first read. In almost any other system against any other conferences slate of defenses I think everyone would have a way different opinion of him.

He's not good at improvising, his arm is meh (but has great touch), he doesn't process quickly, doesn't have elite traits apart from the touch I guess. If you showed me him and told me you can take him in the 4th or 5th I'd be all over him but as a 1st round guy I think you can do much better. He's clearly not in the top tier of QBs this year for me and I'm not sure he's at the top of the next tier either.

I currently have Rosen going #2 overall to San Francisco, Rudolph going #3 overall to Washington (Via a trade. I have the Giants trading for Kirk Cousins.) I have Lamar Jackson going #11 to the New York Jets. I still have Mayfield falling to us, but the more we win, the less I think the chances are. Even in my scenario, he'd have to get passed Denver, San Diego, Baltimore and Buffalo and I could easily see any of those teams choosing him. I still believe our best chance to land a franchise QB would be to trade up. I have Sam Darnold returning to USC and I also have the Saints selecting Ryan Finley to groom behind Drew Brees, (who I believe will be retained on a 2-3 year deal.) I believe Finley would probably sneak into round 1, if he enters the draft. I also have Cleveland selecting Josh Allen in round 2, to compete with A.J. McCarron, (who I believe they trade for), Denver taking Luke Falk in round 2, the L.A. Chargers taking Riley Ferguson in round 2 and Pittsburgh selecting Clayton Thorsen in round 2 (to replace Ben Roethlisberger, who I believe retires after the season.) Yeah I saw the Petty comp this weekend too and it makes sense. Unfortunately, I have seen plenty about how much the NFL loves his work ethic and leadership so I hope we don't get tricked by that and overlook the questionable traits. Can only hope with all the QB desperate teams this year someone takes him earlier than us. As far as I know he's the only QB or prospect we've gone to every game of. It's worrisome.
lol, Rudolph is going to be really good. I doubt we get that lucky and end up with him though. Some of the players that have fell to us in the last few drafts make me think we have a chance though

At this point, if Sam Darnold returns to school, I believe mason Rudolph is a sure-fire top 10 pick. The only way we'll be drafting him is if we trade up. Rosen will probably be taken first, although I wouldn't be surprised to see Rudolph taken ahead of him. I doubt Lamar Jackson makes it out of the top 12 picks, simply because of his athleticism. I would be surprised if he made it to us, but I'm still praying that Baker Mayfield somehow falls to our pick, although at this point it's unlikely. From there on, there's no one left worth spending a high round pick on. I like Finley, but he's just too raw and needs a year or two to sit and develop. I don't think he's one of those QB's you can just throw in and expect him to succeed. He needs another year to mature.
If we can't get Rosen, Rudolph or Mayfield, I'd rather trade out of round 1, sign a decent veteran free agent QB (short-term) and draft Nick Stevens of Colorado State somewhere in the 5th or 6th round to try and develop until the next draft. I don't wanna just draft any old QB, because we need one. I want the right one. This year that means trading up.

I'd stick in the 1st if Nelson or one of the RTs are there....that is our identity right now and we see how bad we look when the OL goes down.

I know that is very high for an OG, but I can't see him getting passed Cincinnati with pick #9. They are desperate for O-Linemen, both on the inside and outside. I'm not that impressed with the OT's outside of Connor Williams who I believe goes top 5 overall. Besides, I don't see an immediate need for a RT. Parnell is far from perfect, but he is much better than last season. RG is more of an immediate need.
I would be more than happy with Orlando Brown if Mayfield, Rudolph, Rosen, and Darnold are gone. Brown could play RG for his first year and take over at RT in 2019. The right side of the line would be nasty all of a sudden.

The downfall of McGlinchey benefited Brown the most. I think he is now #2 OT in this draft behind Connor Williams. Given the absolute mess Cincinnati has at OT, (both LT and RT), I'd be shocked if he made it passed them. I have Williams currently going #4 to Indianapolis and Brown going #5 to Cincinnati. When we pick, I believe the top rated OT's left, will be McGlinchey and Okorfar and I'm not real high on either, especially in round 1.

McGlinchey had the one bad game but im sure some team still loves him. Did you think Cam Robinson or Myles Jack would be there in the 2nd? Ryan Ramczyk fell to the 32 pick last year. If 4 or 5 QBs are picked before us that means that some other positions will fall. What you have in your mock means nothing and we are only in November, lots of things will change between now and April. As deep as this draft is there will be some really good players that will fall to our pick that you think will be gone by the time we pick. Hell Forrest Lamp fell to our pick last year. The last few years lineman haven't went as early as expected. After all the high drafted O-lineman that have been a bust the past 5 years I think teams are a little leary compared to previous years. I did think Jack and especially Cam Robinson, would fall to round 2 though. Jack was coming off an injury and his availability for the next season was in question. He was not gonna be taken in round 1. I was not all that high on Cam Robinson and although he is proving me wrong so far, (thank God!), I didn't see him as a first rounder. His arrest played a big part in that, because I thought teams wouldn't wanna spend a first rounder on a guy with character concerns, especially in a weaker OT class. There are a lot of teams in desperate need of O-Line help this year. Just look at all the QB injuries around the league. As for my mock, I just got through revising it today. The Buffalo QB change took me by surprise and I switched a few things around. Keep in mind that in my mock, Ben Roethlisberger, Phillip Rivers and Carson Palmer will be retired at the end of this season. It's just a gut feeling I have. I also have Arizona trading for Eli Manning, Pittsburgh trading for Tyrod Taylor, New York Giants trading the #3 overall pick to Washington for Kirk Cousins, Cleveland sending a 2nd round pick to the Bengals for A.J. McCarron, Drew Brees re-signing with the Saints on a 3 year deal, the Chargers signing Sam Bradford in free agency, Miami signing Blake Bortles in free agency, Minnesota re-signing both Case Keenum and Teddy Bridgewater and the Jaguars signing Josh McCown as a gateway QB. To my own chagrin, I also have us missing out on the top QB's in the draft. I think we'll have to trade up, but I never predict draft day trades, because they are just too hard. Anyway, here is my mock. Round 1 1. Cleveland- Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State 2. San Francisco- Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA 3. Washington (Via New York Giants)- Mason Rudoph, QB, Oklahoma State 4. Indianapolis- Connor Williams, OT, Texas 5. Cincinnati- Orlando Brown, OT, Oklahoma 6. Denver- Trey Adams, OT, Washington 7. L.A. Chargers- Minkah Fitzpatrick, S/CB, Alabama 8. So everyone gets a franchise QB except the Jags and the Jags don't even draft one either? Ok, lol
