Not necessarily. They’re basically checking out Kessler for 5 months. If they like him, he’s a cheap backup. If not, they drop him.

If they do like one of the QBs in this draft, they can take them no problem.

What’s odd is that I don’t know where a single rookie would start this year for the Jags. Maybe RG?

I think it suggests the guys they'd like will be already drafted. To me, the likelihood now is that rather than take Rudolph (Jackson will be gone) in the first they'll wait until at least round 3. Kessler seems like he has what it takes to be a good backup who can win as a spot starter. Whether he can ever be a legitimate starter for the long term has yet to be determined. He may have the necessary qualities (takes care of the ball and is accurate when under pressure) to be a successful starter for a team which is as talented like the Jaguars. Time will tell about that.

The 1st round choice will now likely be a tight end or offensive lineman. I think they'll pick the latter, unless a potential star like Davenport falls to the 2nd round. They can then get Hurst or Thomas in the 2nd round.

At one point I would have.  I like Kessler though.  I mentioned about going after him last year when the Browns took Kizer.  We are getting him much cheaper at this point

His resume screams "protects the football."

If that's all he does, that's all you want from a designated backup.

Scratch Lamar Jackson and Mason Rudolph.

Not really.  The expectation was that they'd probably land a veteran backup and that they'd more than likely still consider QB in the draft to develop.  Jackson probably won't be there when we pick, but if Rudolph is, it wouldn't be a shock to see them pull the trigger, although I think they'll probably have other options that will be more beneficial to the team more immediately. If anything, this has just taken the pressure off of them to fill a need, and to focus on the best player available.

He showed promise in 2016. 7+ YPA and 65%+ completion hits the basics. Not bad for a back-up.

His salary is peanuts for a backup QB since he's still on his rookie deal and the dead money stays with the Browns, not that there was much of any. There's no guarantee he's on the final 53 here. This did nothing but provide us insurance against missing out on a guy in the draft.

They got their backup, a reasonably competent one, now they can look to draft a development guy if they like one whether its Rudoloph/Jackson at 29 or a Lauletta/White/Falk later.

Still think they go OL, TE, RB depending, of course, on who's available.

This QB class, beyond the top of the class, is hot garbage.

I could see Rudolph or Jackson with the first pick, QBs with potential to push Blake eventually.  But I certainly don't see anything worth selecting later that are backup ceiling caliber "talent."

It's nice that our draft picks aren't being forced to start, and will have to compete for roster and depth chart positions.  It means you're getting better top to bottom for sure.

Agreed. Doesn't change much. I like Kessler though. I thought he did a decent job on a terrible Browns team as a rookie. He at least protects the football. I just think he's an inexpensive insurance plan.

I'll be surprised if Kessler is the opening day QB2. I think this trade reinforces the notion that they have strong interest at QB in this year's draft.
