This newest downturn is a reaction to a pre-existing trade condition but you’d think it was some new disastrous armageddon. Man, need some stable growth. Sometimes I wonder if too many policy changes are taking place at once.

It's not policy changes but rather stupid tweets threatening policy changes.

Or rather, the very irrational responses to them.

Pretty sure the knee jerk reactions to either by day traders and newb advisors isn't helping.

I just quit watching it I put my 4% in the roth 401k plus the company match and just forget it. After we pay down debt and fix the house up I'll look for other investments but a family of six on just one income I've taken the survival approach. Put a little away so I'm not completely behind in the twilight years and hope for the best.

Now China is threatening tariffs on a lot of products that are produced in states that voted for Trump. Like soybeans. That's a disaster for soybean farmers, who export one third of their crop to China.

And this is an example of why it's not so easy to win a trade war against a dictatorship. Xi can do what he wants, and unlike Trump, he is not subject to the whims of the voters. Xi has no 2018 off-year elections to worry about.

It's a huge mistake to overestimate our prospects in a trade war with China. They can withstand a lot more pain than we can, because they're not a democracy.

So, what do you propose then? That we continue trading at a deficit allowing other countries to take advantage of us?

Personally, I am willing to call China's bluff.

Even if that were true, it is also true that they can withstand a lot more suffering than we can, because they are not a democracy.

Yeah, we should increase taxes (that's what a tariff is) on the American consumers and producers! That'll show those Chinese.

What ???   We export products  ??  Even if so, surely our farmers, aircraft manufactures, and other US companies won't be adversely impacted.

This presidential term is about creating job growth, revitalizing our manufacturing plants, and not experience any adverse impacts from other countries as they'll just accept our new policies at face value.

....  welp .... back to the drawing board at Mar-a-Lago to play another round of golf and think up Plan #72 on how to outsmart the rest of the world.

We'll probably see some of the FANG (except maybe Netflix) stocks fall after Trump asked for a Post Office review for the deal with Amazon. I'm not sure if he knows something we don't, but I can't see his angle here. Everyone says both sides make money on the deal

You don't see his angle? Trump's? Amazon is owned by the guy who owns The Washington Post, and if Donald hates anything we know he hates the non-fake news free press.

And what's depressing is that you don't hear Republicans / "small-government conservatives" coming down on Donald for going to war with a private company. Whatever happened to "government shouldn't be picking winners and losers"? But I guess that's what you get when you have a president who governs by what he sees on Fox and Friends.

You equate the WaPo with real news? Larf.

Well, you don't because you never read anything written by small-government conservatives. I've read plenty of criticism from conservative columnists about Trump's "war" on Amazon (and I agree with them, it's a bad decision). But like just about every other Trump crusade, it will blow over.

I'm sure you think The Post doesn't meet the lofty standards of journalism of that of the Trumpette's favorite, The National Enquirer. I guess we'll just have to disagree.
