Dante Fowler's Future

Beasts on the interior DL are top commodities as well. Unfortunately, we're liable to have to let Jackson and/or Dareus go in addition to being unable to resign Fowler. I do think Blackmon was probably talented enough to deal with. We were still giving him chances and kept him on our roster (heck we still own his rights), he just simply didn't want to try to come back.

But we have the top DE duo in the NFL with Calais and Yannick. You would decimate the defensive interior to keep a backup DE? That makes no sense. I realize we're probably gonna have to cut Jackson after this season just to stay under the salary cap. I hate it, but I'm assuming that's why we drafted Bryan, to take over as his replacement. As much as I don't like it, I can live with it though. Dareus on the other hand, has to either be retained or we MUST find a suitable replacement for him. There is a HUGE dropoff in the run defense when Dareus is not in there. I honestly believe a run stopping NT is what we will target in the 2019 draft, so we can make Dareus expendable. Until that happens though, Dareus is the key to our run defense.
There will be a time when you can hate on Ramsey. While he’s here, I love him cus he keeps other teams from getting down the field

Dante Fowler, Jr. needs to grow up? Jacksonville needs to grow up. Twenty three years of Jaguars' football and the front office still believes they need to placate Florida Gator fans in order to sell tickets. Having a local media infested with Florida Gator operatives doesn't help the Jaguars at all.
Former Jaguars GM, Gene Smith, was commanded by Shad Khan to figure out a way to make Tim Tebow a Jaguar. When he was rebuffed by Smith and the staff who told him it was best to stick with developing Gabbert, Khan stated "We're looking ahead with no regrets". Caldwell started off right. The first question out of the mouths of reporters was, "So what do you think about Tim Tebow?" The first thing on the minds of reporters was about a guy who wasn't even on the Jaguars. Reporters are supposed to ignore noise and focus on the players in the locker room. Maurice Jones-Drew said, "For him to come out and be direct and forward with where we are going, that's one of the greatest things I've seen at a press conference in a long time." We all saw how the Florida Gator pom-pom moms in the local media reacted to MJD. Yup, the local media doesn't care a flip about the Jaguars franchise. They'd much rather see Khan move the team to London. They will condescend upon Jaguars fans right and left with all the facts, figures, and falsehoods necessary to jimmy the Jaguars up at the roots. They will cover the trans-Atlantic transfer with glow. In the far off, Khan will get his name slapped on the side of some campus building in Gainesville. That's because the local media's role is that of career-placement specialist for Florida Gator football. Essentially, Bryan and Fowler were sand-bagging it through training camp. That's because neither player was close to being worthy of a first round draft pick. Yet they grabbed lots of spotlight in the game against the Bucs. "Look, Martha! Two Gators are standing out against a back-drop of third and fourth stringers!"

Not really. The Jags will carry over the cap space from this year, and you have several better candidates to cut, like Church, Parnell, and even Abry Jones. Cutting those 3 players saves you over $16M on the cap and none of them are as critical to the team as Jackson or Dareus. The Jags have always had a preference for cutting players with little or no dead money hits. IF they did cut Jackson or Dareus, then Dareus would be the more likely candidate for that reason.

I thought he would have done something against the Bucs scrubs last night.

Not sure how many "hurries" or "hits" he was credited with, but he only got 2 total tackles for the game... I think he played 3 full quarters iirc. He did have a patented Fowler offside penalty... He had one play where he blew up the backfield and got a TFL of like -6 yards. But from what I could tell this is because the RT or up back didn't do what they were supposed to. Both guys end up on the LB coming in and Fowler is essentially untouched. Anywho... the obvious course for Fowler has pretty much been laid out... We're gonna hold on to him for now (I would assume we would have heard of substantial trade rumors). Hope he gets us enough sacks through the year to be worth the roster spot. And hopefully perform well enough someone signs him for money in the offseason netting us a comp pick. Best case scenario, he plays out of his mind and makes it a tough decision for the team. But ultimately I think Fowler is no longer a Jag after this season, no matter what. (08-31-2018, 01:30 PM)Rico Wrote: I thought he would have done something against the Bucs scrubs last night. He made that one nice tackle in the backfield when they forgot to block him. And he got another pretty decent pressure against the third string RT. Other than that he was pretty quiet. And of course he got an offsides. Pretty typical Dante outing really. When teams leave him unblocked he causes damage (but then again who doesn't?). When teams put a guy in his way he is pretty quiet. And he's almost guaranteed to get at least one penalty.

And honestly, I think its best for both parties. Let us get one awesome year of him trying to prove he's a top DE and then let him cash in elsewhere so we can really settle in on Ngakoue and grooming Bryan.

I think, in the end, he finds himself playing OLB on a 3-4 defense. I smile thinking about what Bill Cowher might have done with an athlete like Fowler 20 years ago.

Michael Vick did hard time in a federal penitentiary for instigating a fight between dogs. The cancer Fowler instigates a fight between two women and the media defends him pointing out he did NOTHING illegal.
