Kyler Murray

Lol none of these rookies have.

However, Murray did play against Alabama and they have a good amount of NFL talent on their defense. Murray may turn out to be a bad pro but let’s not act like he hasn’t been sacked before. Not to mention the NFL game is made for QBs. You can’t touch them at all. You can’t even hit them hard or it’s a penalty.

If Murray came out 20-25 years ago, you’d be right but the game is different now.

Everyone keeps saying this but after week 5 of the past season, this was definitely not true. Just look at the playoffs. That tackle of Brady by Donald in the SB would have flagged week 1. No one gave it a second thought when it happened. I don't even remember seeing any penalty for 'landing' on a QB in the last half of the season or playoffs, much less a controversial one.

That is because the Jags didn't make the play offs this year.

My issues with Murray are twofold and neither have to do with his size.

1st - He has a "windup/hitch" throwing motion. We've gone through it with Leftwich & Bortles; Tebow had it too. This is not something that can be "fixed". Yes Murray's total motion is quicker but i think that this elongated throwing motion will lead to a fair amount of fumbles and batted balls that has nothing to do with his height.

2nd - He drops his eyes at the first sign of pressure. all the tape I've watched it's consistently there. When he has a clean pocket or gets to the edge he's fine and goes through his progressions and is smart with the football. But the second a rusher comes through or looks like he's beat his blocker ... Murray's eyes go right towards them and he looks to run/scramble/break the pocket. To me that's a HUGE concern. If you can't keep your eyes downfield and make a play in the face of pressure you're not going to do well. Also he comes from a conference that is known to not play stellar defense. I think in the NFL against bigger faster defenders than the Big-12 he'd struggle if forced to start out of the gate. Now this issue is correctable, but how long will it take to coach that tendency out of him?

His size gets discussed so much that we don't focus on the other warts that are there; and to me those warts are more of a detractor than his size. Overall he's hella athletic, has an arm, is accurate, and when things go right goes through progressions. There's a lot to like but there's also enough to be concerned about that it makes you question whether or not to invest a top 10 pick into him.
Championship Formula:

1) Draft Trevor Lawrence!
2) Play good physical Defense!
3) Keep 91% of the roster healthy!
4) ???
5) Blank #2
6) CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Welp. Guess we are gonna find out. He’s going in the 1st round and will be a starter at some point.

My point is that the game has changed. It’s evolved into more of a college passing attack rather than the “sit back there and make a reads” offense. If thrown into the right situation, I think Murray has a shot.

Murray has been playing QB his whole life and I’m sure he’s taken his fair share of big hits.

That's not an evolution.

That's a devolution... is that a word? the red line ain't there so I guess it is.

When the NFL smartens up and allows defenders to play the game again all this RPO crap will be gone.

I've softened my stance on QB prototypical size over the years, though I still value it.

That said, if this kid has the misfortune of evading outside pressure only to turn into an oncoming 300-pound 3 tech with a head of steam, he's going to miss a bunch of games.

It's a legit concern - and I could see it happening rather easily if he's not in the right coaching/OC situation with a quality line.

Lol, when the NFL 'smartens up and allows defender to play the game again'? If you think that's gonna happen you are deluded. I don't necessarily agree with it, but this sport is headed in one direction only, and it ain't gonna be back to the good ole days. The only choice is whether to embrace it or not. I hope the jags are ahead of the curve when it comes to this, but with coughlin as the head honcho I doubt that's gonna happen.

That's not looking 205 lol. He would look much bigger than that if he was 205 at that height. I'm 5'10 - 5'11 180 and he looks like my size.

For those who have watched him play, has he displayed any "durability" in his college career?

i.e. - has he taken some good hits and bounced back to the huddle?

He only played the 1 year in college.  He was behind Maifield his first couple years

The question remains...

In that year - did he demonstrate any durability?

You know what I'm getting at. Some players are well suited to taking hits and bouncing back. Jags WR Westbrook is a pretty good example of a guy who appears undersized to his position but plays it effectively and clearly has a knack for taking a hard hit and staying in the game.

I'm simply asking if Murray has displayed any similar ability. I've only watched two cut-ups on the kid and I'm assuming there are folks here who have watched much more.

I didnt watch every game but I seen a few games and he seemed to elude pressure pretty well kind of like Russell Wilson.  I have seen him a few nice hits and it didnt really faze him like it does Haskins.  He has some wheels too, I wouldnt be shocked if he runs under a 4.6 or low 4.6

Murray? Likely a 4.3, low 4.4 guy

He didn't really take many clean hits but there's a decent amount of examples where he was pulled down for a sack pretty easily by one hand. Think he had a bad one late on the season.

So that would raise questions about his weight in the pocket at least but still not a big issue imo

Lol no it's not he had a sportscenter hit wearing the same hoodie moments later (or maybe moments before idk).

To answer NYC, I can't remember him taking any huge hits. One of the traits that has gone on the positive side of his ledger is being very smart about avoiding big hits when he has scrambled and/or ran. I've seen him called the anti-RG3 in that regard. Obviously he'll still take a big hit occasionally in the NFL, but it's not an extreme worry to me.

Murray took a huge hit from Quinnen Williams in the 2nd half of their semifinal game. Although he stayed on the ground for some time, he returned back to the game after just 1 play. He's also considered a great "slider," maybe due to his baseball experience. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he ends up as the first quarterback taken since it only takes one quarterback needy team to fall in love with his athleticism. He seems like a guy Jon Gruden might take.
