With the 7th pick in the 2019 NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select...

They’ve done their due diligence on some of the “2nd tier” TE group ie. Smith, Knox etc who should be available in the 2nd round. That, coupled with trading up for a position that Coughlin views as having depth would seem counterintuitive no? But it would be nice to be wrong.

I'm getting a strong feeling it's going to be Hockenson.
I think the Jags would prefer to trade down and select an offensive lineman at around pick #10 to 14. If they can't trade down, they will take the best player available, and I think that will be Hockenson. I don't think the Jags will have an offensive lineman rated high enough to pick at #7. If they were able to trade down to pick 10 or 14, there would still be a very good tackle on the board- preferably Jonah Williams. They would need to get fair compensation- which to me would be a 2nd rounder this year plus another second rounder next year- especially if they drop down to 14. They would then have the option of trading up for either Fant or Smith using the extra pick they received. For this draft to be considered a success, they need to get Hockenson, Fant or Smith. The other tight ends are either too unproven (i.e. Knox) or have too many limitations to be a factor next season.

I would love it to be an exciting offensive player like Hockenson.
But I’m convinced it will be another defensive lineman or someone from a university in Florida.
If we trade back to 11-13 and Hockenson is gone when do yall want? Williams would be my top guy if available.

If the price isn't unreasonable, I'd likely trade back up into the the end of round 1 to get Irv Smith before the Patriots take him. There's a big drop-off after that at tight end. Williams and Smith would be good, but I'd prefer Hockenson and McGary. Unfortunately, it looks like he'll be taken before the Jaguars pick in round 2.

I don't think we'd be able to get Jonah or Hockenson if we traded down that far. Maybe Dillard or Fant though.

TEs almost always slip further than you think they will. Let's say Washington wants Haskins and they give up their 2nd rounder plus a 4th for him. 7. Washington- Haskins 8. Lions- Ferrell 9. Buffalo- Metcalf 10. Broncos- Taylor 11. Bengals- Jonah Williams 12. GB- Dillard 13. Miami- Burns 14. ATL- Cody Ford 15. Jags- Hockenson Then with their 2 2's they take a G/T and Harry
