Russell Wilson becomes second Black QB to win Super Bowl

(This post was last modified: 02-04-2014, 06:28 PM by JagsFan1.)

Quote:How many black history books have you read, classes you took? The populatuon of blacks in America is a little under 13%. Of course you wouldn't hear anything about the other players, when our American history is so heavily skewed to one group of people. When I was in highschool we spent less than two weeks on topics such as Slavery, Jim Crow, andthe civil rights period. I think we spent more time romanticizing about the leaders of old than anything else. It took me going to college and becoming a grown man before I learned any of the nitty gritty about my African/European/and Native American ancestry. But you are implying that firsts are the only thing that matter? You are so totally and utterly clueless. Sorry the world is not color blind, sorry race does exist. I did not invent the term. Some European from way back when did despite there being no biological basis for it. Russell sees himself as a black male, and as a black male his experiences are colored by his culture and all the history that is tied to it. Sorry it bothers you so. Cry baby.

Solid Snake, you seem to be extremely offended by something here. If it bothers you that much that I do not share Russell Wilson's opinion, you have major issues. I have an opinion. Wilson does too. They don't have to be the same. Get over it.

Quote:We see color.  That's reality.  But we shouldn't judge by color.  I think once these events stop being milestones then we will eventually get closer to the point of seeing people as people even if we also see color.  That in itself will take time.  We will get there.  Not entirely, but to the point where race is no longer an issue and where we will look back as a people and think how ignorant our ancestors were.

This ^

We are on the same page.

Quote:IMO the second time is not a milestone. Sure, it is great to have a second guy do it, but that will not diminish what Doug Williams did. Nobody talks about the second black MLB player or Olympian. It is never mentioned because the most important thing is there was a first black man to do it. Does anybody even know who followed Jackie Robinson and Jesse Owens? What about the second black guy to do anything in life with white people? None of them are in history books. So you can't convince me it matters that Russell Wilson is the second black quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

Whether someone knows who followed Jackie Robinson or Jesse Owens or not, the people who followed thereafter is a part of setting history as well.

That is exactly what is taking place with Russell Wilson.

After Tom Fears made history being the first Latino head coach in the NFL, many people doubted they would see another Latino coach again soon, then came Flores, and Rivera.

Guess what? they are a part of building history as well.

Whether someone has a liberal, or conservative viewpoint, a authoritative figure should not lock a thread for the sole purpose to get the last word in all the while prohibiting someone else from being able to respond.

I'm only offended by your sheer ignorance but I cannot say I'm surprised.

When I look at Ron Rivera, I see a white man, not a Latino.

People make a big deal about the first time for racial minorities and women because of American history. That makes sense. But today people are calling LGBT members "the new black," meaning now that black people are accepted in society, we have to worry about another demographic minority. That takes away the importance of being the second black person to do something IMHO.

I think Wilson is just proud to be who he is. Personally I don't care about his race (but I can understand if it is important to him), I'm just happy, he's a great QB and even better person. And I'd like him even if he wasn't on "my" team.

Nah, he definitely looks and is Latino.

I cant discuss the rest because no political talk is allowed.

I am sure you would agree it is much better than a word that starts with n and ends with r.

Shut up. He's not African at all. He's American. Nobody calls me German-American or my wife Irish-American, because we're proud to be American no matter where generations before us resided.

I never thought about it until you asked whether or not it was a good or bad thing for you.  Then I thought if it was a good or bad thing for me that I never thought about it.  Now I'm wondering why you had to make me go think about it.

Why do I have to think about this at all?

Quote:I don't see anyone making a big deal of it. It's notable, but not ground breaking. Given the history of our nation, that's a good thing.

The bottom line is that Russell Wilson seems to be a good man. We'd all like to have that in our epitaph, wouldn't we?

Even Bunnie.

I don't think I want to have "Bunnie was a good man" in my epitaph. I don't plan on having any type of rearrangement surgery, so I'll stay and innie...not an outie thank you very much!!

Just to add to this. "Indians" call themselves Native Americans because they arnt Indians. Indians are people from India. Columbus thought he sailed to India and (mistakenly)called the natives Indians and they name just stuck. Its not so much a "pride thing" more so then simply wanting to be correctly identified.

That concludes our nearly useless history lesson on a football forum Smile

I knew that LOL. But wanting to be correctly identified is a pride thing.

Love has nothing to do with race. People marry who they love. Fred Taylor married a white woman too.
