Here's some interesting and optimistic news about sports managing to make it work during COVID-19:

Right now on ESPN there The Basketball Tournament is going on. The players participating in it had to test multiple times for COVID-19 before being allowed to participate in it, and it's a quarantine tournament. There are also some other rules that have been implemented regarding this tournament. But they are making it work right now and the players look like they are having fun. Outside of the changes due to the virus, they are playing like they normally would, with physical interaction, including doing hustle plays where there is touching involved. They are also doing things like slapping hands, etc... In spite of everything they seem pretty comfortable and look like they would even without changes due to the virus. This could be a preview of what the NBA restart could look like, except there will be much more excitement for the NBA tournament. And maybe even the NFL as well, depending on things shake out with things like planning for the upcoming season.

Also some MLB baseball players have been tested and so far less than 2% have tested positive and over 4,000 people/personel were tested ahead of a Formula One race in Austria and no one tested positive. The most recent testing for Formula one was carried out over seven days and they are being tested every five days.

More positive sports news, MLS is back. Currently right now they are playing a game on ESPN right now. (New York City Union vs Philadelphia) And the TBT is continuing today. I'm glad that more sports are starting to return and I hope things work out for as many of these leagues as possible. It would be nice to see at least a some of them finish up their seasons.

An entire team had to opt out though because they had ten players test positive.

Wonder if the Jags could non-Covid their way to the Super Bowl.  Just quarantine the entire team with NO practices and hope all the other teams contract Covid, resulting in wins by forfeit --- we could go 19-0 and not play a single game.  That would kind of suck picking #32 in the draft, knowing when reality sets in during the 2021 season, that we still suck.

If things were heading in this direction you and I both know ol' Rog would cancel the season.

According to various reporters on Twitter, players are scheduled to return to training camp by July 28th. Some teams will have their rookies start to report next week, including the Texans and the Chiefs. Their rookies will report on Monday. Other rookies may start to report to camp on July 21 and Quarterbacks/injured players may start to report on July 23. All other players can report by the 28th. As or right now until the NFLPA agrees to an infectious disease plan with the NFL, only 20 players will be allowed in a facility at a time:

Also NBA players are currently practicing to prepare for their rebooted season and the MLB is still scheduled to begin next weekend. There was also a picture on Twitter of what looked to be a NHL practice going on.

I think they can. They pulled off NFL seasons during SARS and other bad flu seasons.

"Even if the true death toll is now closer to 50,000 than 100,000, this pandemic is a big deal. But we need some perspective. During the 2017-18 flu season, 61,000 Americans died from the flu."

I still just don't see what happens when a team's entire position group or coaching section gets COVID or quarantined. It's impossible to know who the super spreaders are.

Especially with the lack of pre-season games, limited practice time, and COVID precautions, getting new FA players quickly during the season will be really difficult.

Here is more positive news regarding the NBA. It's being reported that no player in the NBA bubble has tested positive for the virus since July 20th.

The only issue is that NFLPA didn't want the bubble. They are going to have issues just like MLB has because you cannot trust all of the players to follow the rules.

If that's true, maybe they will change their opinion now that they see that the bubble works.

If the NFL tries to continue without a bubble, you will see games canceled, just like MLB.

If they want to have a predictable season, they need to plan for a series of bubbles.

Look at the big state universities that aren't opening this fall. Most of these would be suitable locations for a bubble, they have practice fields and dorm rooms and security, and they're empty right now. Bring four teams to a bubble, each of these eight bubbles would be about the same size as the NBA's bubble.  Wait 2 weeks after everybody checks in, and play three round robin games in fifteen days.

It's doable.  You can play three games per month this way.

The only limit to how long you can keep it going, is how much tolerance the players have for isolation.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.
