Monroe Traded

Quote:A couple third day picks is what I would expect if a team like Seattle or Denver traded for him to replace their injured elite LTs and let him walk after the year. Baltimore didn't trade for a 25 (26?) year old above average LT for a single season. Caldwell knows damn well the Ravens want him as there long term piece there. Make them pay for that. After seeing some of the bad offensive lines around the league, I find it hard to believe a team wouldn't give up at least a 2nd round pick for a good young player at a premium position, or something like a 3rd and 4th (I hope that's what the Baltimore trade turns out to be)

Bravo.

More good points.

Quote:Since the franchise tag has been around how many actually played under the tag for an entire season vs signing a new deal?

And to the ones who have and walked afterwards guess what?

Those teams received compensatory picks.

You will get one compensatory for Monroe leaving.  If they get a third in this trade then what will you be complaining about.  Tommy already said they don't have a 7th to trade, so that wipes out a 7th round pick.  I just read on NFL.com that it is two middle round picks.

I heard that too. In fact, Gene Smith and co. were voted the best front office in all of football by the professionals. :woot:

Quote:Hey tmd. If you had no trade partner would you franchise Monroe? If you wouldn't and were going to let him walk. Then something be better then nothing. Right?

If the Jaguars ended up getting something like two 4th round picks or a 4th and a 5th Round pick in this trade,   from the standpoint of getting the most possible for Eugene Monroe,   I would have waited to much closer to the October 29th trade deadline to see if another team would give them a better offer.   Like I mentioned around page 6 or 7 of this thread,   injuries often happen in the NFL.    The demand for Monroe's services might have been noticeably higher if an injury to a starting LT occurred.

Being that Dave Caldwell made the trade now,   if he only got two 4th Round picks or worse in return,   the conclusion that comes to mind is that Caldwell absolutely wants the 1st pick of the 2014 Draft.     With Monroe remaining on the Jaguars roster,    it would have increased the chances of the team winning a game.    Especially if Justin Blackmon proves to be a difference maker.   Hence,  Caldwell probably believes that it's better to get less for Monroe than risk losing the first pick of the draft.      I'm expecting more trades coming in which the Jaguars are weakened for this season.

Quote:who said Monroe was going to fetch that??

When you franchise a player and trade them, you can make whatever deal you wish. It doesn't have to be for the "textbook" 2 first rounders.....thats only the price if stipulated (exclusive rights FA, IIRC)>

The Jags could have negotiated a 2nd & 5th round compensation while Monroe was franchised next offseason. At that point you probably would have had more desperate suitors.

Don't explain it to them TMD.

In Caldwell I trust.

Yeah. Caldwell is looking stupid already. We just know how to hire the right guys apparently. where can I get a job to ruin a franchise?

That would be the last alternative. Ignoring the fact about the franchise tag I see.

Quote:We didn't even do as well as the Marlins........at least the Florida Marlins usually get very good draft choices/ (i.e. prospects) in return for their fire sales....as proven by their rebuilding that led to their 2 world series wins. We just got the equivalent of 2 Emilio Bonafacio's in exchange for a Mike Stanton....
Dave isn't trying to be the Marlins, he's trying to be the Astros (in a good way). I just started a post on it explaining.

GUYS CALM DOWN..

Maybe they just want to save as much cap space as possible to go hard in free agency?

...and I'd have little if any problem with that  - I'd just like to get some draft choices in return that are high enough to actually matter/ benefit us in the ensuing rebuild.

Or maybe Caldwell could be worse than Gene

Scroll down to non exclusive tag.  Read the other while you are at it.

You are thinking restricted free agency, not the franchise tag.

What have Caldwell late rounds done for this team?

Sanders is invisible despite playing a ton of snaps

denard robinson "offensive weapon" pffffffffftttttttttttttt

There isn't anyone else worth mentioning.

As others have pointed out very few late round picks make a big impact.

Exactly.

A 1st rounder for a premium player playing a premium position would have been excellent, especially looking at what the Browns got for an average RB playing a position that is slowly being phased out of the game. A handful of late picks isn't going to do this team any more good than signing a bunch of UDFAs.
