Jaguars coaching candidates? (merged coaching threads)
|
With the Jaguars owning the top pick in the draft with Trevor Lawrence looking like he'll declare and be the best QB prospect to come along since Luck, the temptation is to get an offensive guy to maximize the chances of developing Lawrence. While there is no doubt that Lawrence's development is paramount, I think it's most important that we get a good coach. If he happens to have an offensive leaning, that's icing on the cake.
There are three recent examples of teams teams hiring offensive coaches to develop the young QB only to have the overall team suffer as a result. Denver hired Josh McDaniels from the Patriots in 2009. After finishing 8-8 his first year, he got fired after 12 games his second year. The Bucs hired our old offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter to replace Lovie Smith, a coach who had taken the Bears to a Super Bowl, to develop former first overall draft pick QB Jameis Winston. Now there were plenty who thouhgt this a dubious hire considering how Koetter's stint at Arizona State ended. Nevertheless, the Bucs got rid of the former Super Bowl coach for Koetter, and after three nondescript seasons, the Bucs got rid of Koetter. Most recently, Cliveland hired Freddie Kitchens yp help develop 1st overall pick Baker Mayfield. However, after one poor season, the Browns dumped him for Kevin Stefanski, who ran more of a run centered attack with Minnesota. This year, Stefanski wound up taking the Browns and Mayfield to the playoffs. I do not suggest offensive guys can't be successful. To the contrary, offensive coaches have performed at a championship level in the NFL. But just focus on getting a good coach. If he's worth the hire, he'll see to it Lawrence gets all the support he needs. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

McDaniels was a Belichick Disciple. I'd stay far away from those regardless of which side of the ball they coached. Koetter and Kitchens were hires from within -- Marrone was one too! I'd stay away from hires from within tbqh. So just say no to Jay Gruden. Daboll is a Belichick disciple too...so would you stay away from him as well then?

We should just do the FSU strategy and just go straight to our 5th choice.

I probably would. I mean he does at least have some time away from Belichick in the NFL. So that'd make it a little easier to take. But I'd be wary of anyone from his tree tbh.
Did anybody catch the herd show on FS1? He was supposed to have urban myer on a few minutes ago. The host of the show decided not to have him on at the last min today because Urban said he would not answer NFL questions and jaguar speculation.

I think Brian Flores has been doing a pretty good job in Miami, and Mike Vrabel in Tennessee. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
One name not talked about who i would love is Jim Harbaugh, there was talks a couple months ago he could be ready to leave Michigan, he has a good history of young QBs and did a good job in San Francisco and even made Colin Kaepernick look like the next big thing.
I am just glad that Khan said he was going to cast a wide net. It was very disheartening that the rumors were we had all but offered the job with Meyer without interviewing anyone else.
If we go through all of the interviews and still wind up going with Meyer I'll feel better about it. Didn't the Jags just have a situation with a bad locker room environment?

A lot of that was likely due to his issues with Baalke, so I mean he would definitely have to leave the organisation. But San Fran fell apart immediately after he left. No way! He has turned Michigan into a laughing stock.

Due to his recruiting which won’t be an issue if we have a GM making the decisions.
I would be very beyond ok with Anthony Lynn. The Chargers never quit on him even at the end, and he did some great work with Justin Herbert.

Lol, the Chargers firing him is the ultimate sign of them quitting on them, LMAO. Urban is not worth 12M a year. I realize the going rate for HC's is rising, but he is an unproven commodity at this level with health baggage. Would rather take a shot on a young coordinator who can give us a Tomlin/Belichick type presence for a decade+. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Now in the EARLY stages of replacing said firees, the fans continue to clamour because they May Not get their way. But Of Course I watch ALL of the games. Even when I'm watching all of the home games sitting within the stadium, I still go back and rewatch the recorded games. I understand fan's frustration but we cannot do anything about it. It's out of our hands. BTW, other than 2020 it could be worse. Much Worse. I know not whom we'll hire as GM and HC but I do know that I won't worry over it while positively supporting our team. I want the best for our team just like most Jaguar fans. Time Will Tell. NH3...
