It is my understanding that once the school year is over and the player is no longer part of the team, they can seek endorsements, accept gifts and other things without it being an issue. If he had gotten married during the season and fans in Jacksonville knew we were getting him and sent him gifts, that probably would've been an issue.

OK, so are you stating the Jets could give Trevor Lawrence $50 million cash gift prior to the draft resulting in Trevor independently stating he will not play for the Jags (pulling a John Elway or Eli Manning trick).  Jets subsequently offer the Jags the #2 pick + 1st round picks in 2022 and 2023 -- the Jags being backed into a corner, accept the deal.   That's legal?  Perhaps the requirement of the NFL having to approve all trades could be justification for the NFL to shut down the shady deal.

I think what he was saying is that the player is able to receive gifts/compensation after the school year is over - since he's no longer a collegiate athlete and isn't governed by NCAA rules.

I also think there a difference between your scenario of a team manipulating the draft process by giving a prospective draftee 50 million dollars, and some fans giving a potential player a wedding gift and donating the leftover $$ to charity. One is from team officials while fans have no official ties to the team - I'm not sure if a team can be penalized for the actions of their fans....You may be right about the team example being covered by the league having to approve trades

Vic, I imagine your comments regarding Trevor Lawrence on Monday led to an interesting inbox on Tuesday. Yet, aren't the questions/issues you raise exactly the kinds of questions/issues an NFL GM must address and answer regarding every draft pick, let alone the first pick in the draft? That said, if you were acting as the Jags' GM, is there any other pick you would make at No. 1? If Lawrence's name isn't on the card turned into the league, I would imagine it would be torches and pitchforks and tar and feathers coming to One Stadium Place.
So what would it be if Lawrence is a bust? Oh, that's OK, everyone said he was the right pick? It doesn't work that way. A franchise twists and turns with every first-round pick it makes. It agonizes over what player it should select. I haven't seen enough agonizing by the Jaguars. This pick was made months ago. Is there another player I would pick with the first overall selection? I don't think that's the right question to ask. Lawrence belongs in the top spot. The question is should the Jaguars trade that pick and collect the king's ransom that would help the Jaguars rebuild quickly? Could they trade the pick and still get the quarterback they need? I haven't seen enough debate along those lines.

C'mon Vic, we been picking those second rate QB for twenty years now. I don't remember him advocating Indy trading away R1 P1 when Luck was in their sights. My biggest complaint with his response, though, is that he suggests that we didn't even consider moving off the pick. He has no idea what Urbz, Baalke, or Shad have discussed behind closed doors. Just because they don't speak to the matter publicly doesn't mean they haven't discussed just how much it would take them to come off of #1. I think there is a lot of business that Urbz keeps behind the curtain.

Along with this, he has already stated that this draft is suspect, that opt-out, extra eligibility and the like have thinned the pool in this year's class. Not sure why we would want a glut of picks on top of the ten we already have.

He's so out of character on this topic. I have been a faithful reader for years, even while he was at GB, and I've never seen him making these kinds of statements. He was equally dismissive of the Tebow questions while he was here, but in no way should Tlaw and Tebow ever be considered equals.

What a [BLEEP] response.  The dude had a legit point because what if something like this were against NFL rules. Could they have jeopardized the #1 pick by issuing gifts to draft candidates?  I assume they looked into this legally prior to sending the gift but dang, why even bother risking anything since the NFL would likely prefer Trevor going to the Jets.

There's no legal issue if it is individuals making all the contributions. My first question when the story broke was "where in the world does he have 20K? Do they mean he pledged to donate?" But then I figured between the endorsement deals already signed and possible front from his agent, he probably already has a pretty ample bank account going.

(Along with some other teams who have been asking about him.)

I have preferred NFL Network, but over the years, they've gotten more like ESPN when it comes to their adverse treatment of the Jaguars.

Last year, they actually combined their coverage.

This year, they go back to separate coverage, but I will continue to stick with ESPN.

Last year, someone posted a link to draft coverage on line that was independent of the networks and it was pretty good.

If anyone remembers that site, could you please provide the link again?

From what I understand, that could happen. It would be stupid on the Jets behalf, because if I'm the Jags, I still draft him, refuse any trades and tell him he plays for us or no one. If we still drafted him, we would still own his rights.
