The Ravens took a risk by giving us a 4th and 5th for first dibs on signing a free agent that Monroe will be.  For them, if they somehow sign him, it's an OK deal.

 

For us it's a good deal regardless of where he ends up.  The end result is the same:  We have a 4th and 5th for a player that was leaving anyway.  Now if he plays for the Dolphins or the Ravens, it doesn't matter to us at all.

 

I am just having a hard time with the compensation, given Monroe's pedigree, current ability (top 10 in PFF past 3 years, age, and relative injury free career.

You have to wrap your head around the fact that all he had left on his contract with us was a partial season.   All we traded away was a partial season.

Well, Jason Peters just signed with Philadelphia for five years, $51 million with $19 million Guaranteed. I feel like Peters is probably a better Left Tackle than Monroe is, but he is also on the other side of 30. I can see Monroe pushing for a contract somewhere along those lines. I don't know if he'll get it, but it seems like a logical place to start.

I love how people just assume it was a 4th + 5th "or nothing"....lol, as if there was ZERO chance that the Jags could have got more than that with -then- FOUR WEEKS remaining until the trade deadline. 

 

As a matter of fact, a week after the trade, the Dolphins started having their OL issues, as well as aother teams with injuries, - there could have conceivably been more competition driving the price up at that point. 

 

But at some point you have to make a decision.   You can't just hold out forever hoping for a better deal.   A bird in the hand.   The only choice on the table was whether we get a couple of draft picks for a guy who is on a 12 game contract, or if he walks at the end of the year and we get nothing.

I would want them to agree to a new contract before I gave up any picks for them.  Otherwise, THEY WALK AT THE END OF THE YEAR AND WE GIVE UP DRAFT PICKS AND GET NOTHING IN RETURN.

If Monroe goes elsewhere (than re-signing in Balt), then yes, it looks somewhat foolish. But Deacon acts as if Ozzie giving up that compensation at the time was a "a lot" and it really wasn't - especially if he winds up re-signing.

Something else to consider - 

 

If the Ravens lose Monroe to a team signing him huge contract somewhere else - they don't lose much - they'll likely regain that back with a future 3rd round compensatory pick - which will basically cancel out the 4th & 5th they gave to Jacksonville. 

 

The Ravens don't lose at all in the whole thing. They took a chance and will either get their OLT that they were looking for or they'll essentially get the value their picks given away - back.
