Quote:not really. I am just having a hard time with the compensation, given Monroe's pedigree, current ability (top 10 in PFF past 3 years, age, and relative injury free career. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:I am just having a hard time with the compensation, given Monroe's pedigree, current ability (top 10 in PFF past 3 years, age, and relative injury free career. You have to wrap your head around the fact that all he had left on his contract with us was a partial season. All we traded away was a partial season. He's not going to give the Ravens any kind of discount. He wouldn't have given us a discount, either.
It's a joke to think we didn't make out on that deal. He was going to walk from us, and may end up walking from them.
"You do your own thing in your own time. You should be proud."
I wish all teams would offer up young, top end, premium position players in a contract year for a 4th and a 5th.
We have the picks and the cap space to lock up a few of them. Unfortunately for us, we appear to be the only team that does that. Quote:PS How much $ will be command?
When you get into the endzone, act like you've been there before.

Well, Jason Peters just signed with Philadelphia for five years, $51 million with $19 million Guaranteed. I feel like Peters is probably a better Left Tackle than Monroe is, but he is also on the other side of 30. I can see Monroe pushing for a contract somewhere along those lines. I don't know if he'll get it, but it seems like a logical place to start.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!
If this draft is as deep as all the evaluators say it is, this trade is even sweeter.
Quote:I love how people just assume it was a 4th + 5th "or nothing"....lol, as if there was ZERO chance that the Jags could have got more than that with -then- FOUR WEEKS remaining until the trade deadline. But at some point you have to make a decision. You can't just hold out forever hoping for a better deal. A bird in the hand. The only choice on the table was whether we get a couple of draft picks for a guy who is on a 12 game contract, or if he walks at the end of the year and we get nothing.
Quote:I wish all teams would offer up young, top end, premium position players in a contract year for a 4th and a 5th. I would want them to agree to a new contract before I gave up any picks for them. Otherwise, THEY WALK AT THE END OF THE YEAR AND WE GIVE UP DRAFT PICKS AND GET NOTHING IN RETURN. The deal worked out well. Monroe would have left after this season and asked a king's ransom for his services.
Quote:The deal worked out well. Monroe would have left after this season and asked a king's ransom for his services. Caldwell had four options: Trade him for picks Let him walk Franchise him Overpay him to a long term deal In the long run, I think they made the right choice. When the Ravens get stuck franchising him, it will look even better.

Quote:If they re-sign him then the 4th and the 5th for that caliber of player is peanuts. They could have signed him without giving up the draft picks. He's a free agent.
Quote:The deal worked out well. Monroe would have left after this season and asked a king's ransom for his services. Quote:Caldwell had four options: Caldwell also could have also franchised- then traded him during the offseason, which would have instantly opened up any cap room that the initial "franchising" would have taken up.
Something else to consider -
If the Ravens lose Monroe to a team signing him huge contract somewhere else - they don't lose much - they'll likely regain that back with a future 3rd round compensatory pick - which will basically cancel out the 4th & 5th they gave to Jacksonville. The Ravens don't lose at all in the whole thing. They took a chance and will either get their OLT that they were looking for or they'll essentially get the value their picks given away - back.
Quote:Caldwell also could have also franchised- then traded him during the offseason, which would have instantly opened up any cap room that the initial "franchising" would have taken up. Which in the end is no different than what they did. Of course in this scenario they pay him his salary for the entire 2013 season, risk receiving less compensation in a trade, deal with the possibility of not finding any trade partner and get stuck paying him 10m for 2014.

Quote:Caldwell had four options: He hasn't signed a deal yet, why not wait until we know what he signs for before we decide if he's overpaid? Quote:Just to be different, Bortles.
Quote:He hasn't signed a deal yet, why not wait until we know what he signs for before we decide if he's overpaid? Lets be real. Somebody is going to overpay for him, whether it be Baltimore or Miami.
