First Take with a wow stat
|
I guess I can say that stuff like this is mildly interesting, but I'd never let something like that alter my draft strategy. If you think a guy is worth being taken at 3, then take him. You'd better be right of course, but that is true if he's a WR, DB, DE, QB, whatever.
There are certainly examples of receivers who are worth that selection. If you think you see one, I'd gladly take that. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Fun and interesting stat, but not sure it means much. If I had my mind set on Watkins, which I don't, I don't think this would dissuade me in the least bit.
My biggest issue is that there is so much depth at WR in this draft that we can grab a quality starter in the 2nd or 3rd round. Plus we have a lotto ticket with Blackmon. I wouldn't be pissed if we grabbed him, but I'm not sure why we would over someone like Mack or Clowney (which I'm assuming one should be there).
Since the 1984 draft (30 years), only 11 of those drafts had a WR chosen with a top 5 pick. Of the 150 total top 5 picks over this 30 year period, solely 13 of those picks were a WR.
They were... Kenny Jackson (KC, 126 catches, 8 seasons) Irving Fryar (NE, 851 catches, 17 seasons, 5x probowl) Desmond Howard (Was, 123 catches, 11 seasons, 1x probowl, Superbowl champ and MVP) Michael Westbrook (Was, 285 catches, 8 seasons) Keyshawn Johnson (NYJ, 814 catches, 11 seasons, 3x probowl, Superbowl champ) Peter Warrick (Cin, 275 catches, 6 seasons) Charles Rogers (Det, 36 catches, 3 seasons) *Andre Johnson (Hou, 927 catches, 11 seasons, 7x probowl) *Larry Fitzgerald (Ari, 846 catches, 10 seasons, 8x probowl) *Braylon Edwards (Cle, 359 catches, 8 seasons, 1x probowl) *Calvin Johnson (Det, 572 catches, 7 seasons, 4x probowl) *AJ Green (Cin, 260 catches, 3 seasons, 3x probowl) *Justin Blackmon (Jac, 93 catches, 2 seasons) "*" still active in NFL Of these 13 WRs chosen in the top 5 picks, 15% (2) won superbowl rings, 62% (8) became pro-bowlers, 38% (5) are likely to become inducted into the hall-of-fame. This is indeed powerful history, that WRs taken in the top 5 of the draft have become very successful and impactful players in this league. But, like all position groups, there is no guarantee that a top 5 selection will be a success.
This thread avoids the underlying question. Why the ¥§¿% were you watching First Take to begin with?
Only a chump boos the home team!

The thing that gets under my skin about stats like this is that it attempts to normalize drafts across years and that's simply not fair. Take a look at the recent history of this team; we had the #2 overall pick last season in a draft that was thought, and still may turn out, to be lacking in "star quality." Now fast forward to this season. Who doesn't think that this season's #3 overall isn't "worth" more than last seasons First Round pick based on who's available in the draft.
Drafts are independent entities that have their own discreet values. Yes, there are lots of similarities but it just seems flat out wrong to imply that a top five pick in every draft for the last twenty years has the same value. It just makes no sense to me.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!
Quote:I hate First Take with a passion, but I will give them credit for finding this incredible stat (or stealing and not giving proper credit). Mike & Mike were talking about that stat this morning at 6:30am. I guess you could say First Take found the stat from a different show that aired earlier in the day.
Quote:1. How are you defining "elite WRs?" HOF or had more than just 3 good years . I just looked back at the past SB winners. Colston , Nicks , Boldin are good but def not elite .
So you're telling me that if Sammy turned out to be Elite like an A.J. or Calvin, you would be upset?

No correlation at all between the two. Seems like the same old First Take garbage to me.
Quote:Lol, not just the 5th slot...top 5 overall. That includes:Fitz went to a superbowl so who cares? I don't think they lost the game because of his draft position. Quote:Looks like we need to cut Blackmon, and draft Teddy or MackMaybe Detroit will agree to swap Blackmon with Megatron so that we both have a chance at a Super Bowl then. Quote:No WR taken in the top 5 has ever won a Super Bowl with the team that originally took them. Quote:That's actually very not true. Almost 40% of the Super Bowls have been won by top 5 pick QBs. Dam...I actually agree 100% with KYjaggy and this thread in general. I have nothing more to say, other than that I don't understand what the fuss is about with the other posters, and I myself do find these WR statistics quite interesting. I did not know this.
I want 3 players. Clowney, Bridgewater, Manziel. Jaguars have the number 3 pick. Just give me one of those 3 at 3, and I'm happy.

Quote:40% is less than the remainder of QBs. That is so idiotic... That would only matter if you literally had all the other pics, 6-200 something, to find your QB.
