Quote:I think Monroe gets top 5 money, easy. Who is to say this wasn't the Jags only offer? If that were the case, and Caldwell didnt make the trade you would be complaining that we let him walk without any compensation. It's a lose/lose with your logic.
If EM gets top 5 money, then that is overpaying in my book because he isn't a top 5 tackle.
Monroe wasn't staying here. Me thinks Caldwell knew more about the situation than any of us. When you think about it, for a draft this deep, we got a pretty good deal. Two pick could equal two potential starts for next season and beyond at the expense of a guy that more than likely was already slowly taking things out of his locker

I agree that you should indeed try to draft starters even in rounds that late and not be the kinda GM that just "punts" those picks away (like we have had in the past) ....but that said, its a tall order to expect most 4th or 5th rounders to pan out to that level. Caldwell sold his 5.0 Mustang for the price of a Focus. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

You really make no sense at all and your entire arguement is based on assumptions.
More like he had a 4 month lease on a Mustang but was able to sell it for the price of a Focus. Kind of a no brainer when you add that caveat in.

You just can't bring yourself to admit Caldwell made a great move here, huh? Quote:You just can't bring yourself to admit Caldwell made a great move here, huh? We traded (at worst) a top 10 staring OT for two mid round picks which are statistically unlikely to amount to anything. We have cap room coming out the wazoo to franchise him if Monroe had wanted to play hardball. Unless we are going to make a major splash in FA, we would have probably got a comp pick equal to that of the trade. Quote:Just to be different, Bortles.

Quote:And keep your #2 draft pick at a position he hasn't played since high school and never even give him a chance to see if he may actually be BETTER than Monroe? Assumptions much? Or how about don't draft a freaking OT at 2 when you already have one if you know you're not going to keep both. Quote:Just to be different, Bortles.
Clearly Caldwell and company were not high on Monroe. I really have no reason to suspect the team wanted to franchise him or pay him what he was likely asking for in terms of salary. The team got what they could have in a trade. The other options would have been let him walk in free agency for nothing.

Quote:You just can't bring yourself to admit Caldwell made a great move here, huh? he didn't make a "great" move here. It would have been a "great move" had he gotten proper value for a top 10, 27 year old OLT, - thats more than a 4th & a 5th. If Monroe signs elsewhere than Baltimore, yes, it will then look "better" for the Jags, but still not at the level of a "great" move. "Good" move at that point? Ok.

The team got what they could have in a trade. The other options would have been let him walk in free agency for nothing. They took the first offer they received for Monroe and that was 4 weeks prior to the deadline. They didn't "get what they could" for him, they took the first low ball offer and ran. In the coming weeks the Steelers and Miami OL situations became dire, and the Jags by waiting a few weeks would have then saw a 3 team bidding war for Monroe. Thats the proper way to have handled it. Not jump at the first "feeler" offer. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Quote: I believe you answered yourself Well, a few of the players that would have been worthy of making a "major splash" in FA are already gone, i.e. Orakpo & Hardy... That leaves Mack & Byrd... Most of the rest of available FA's are of a lesser level and don't warrant paying big money because the team isn't going to benefit from their "average to good" play at max. |
