Head Coach Candidates (Merged Threads)

Why do you think the jags owner took a chance on a wildcard like coach urban? Not too many great coaches are available and how many want to coach the jags? Then the jags get stuck with marrones and gus. This team needs an offensive coach no matter how big name he probably wont be judging from the past. The offensive coordinator needs to be a good one also. Keep the defense. Dont ruin this deffense scheme now that the jags actually send blitzes and play super hard. It's tough when the roster isn't ready for prime time yet. Let's hope for the best.

I don't agree with the thought "how many coaches want to coach the Jags". The Jags have 1 of 32 positions in the entire world. The owner has shown to be very patient with coaching staffs. With just these 2 facts alone any coach would be happy to get this job.

Right? It took one of the worst coaching performances ever for him to decide to fire Meyer. Like an almost historic dumpster fire of dysfunction. Even an average NFL coach will get three seasons from him.

Hell yeah! so we can live in mediocrity once again 9-8/8-9 seasons every year and a mediocre offense every year!! wooohooo!

All I will say to that is, he was able to be mediocre with Leftwich/garrard and got 5 wins out of a rookie Gabbert.

Maybe not as bad as we thought... he had no QB.

Outside of this MB he seems pretty favored by Jags fans.

I’m yet to find good reason to oppose his hiring, personally.

While he's not my favorite candidate. I would have no opposition to hiring Pederson at all. He should be much better than what we have had. If we could pair him with a G.M. like Ed Dodds of Indy, I think we could get things turned around.

I’ve said on here a few times that I gained some respect for JDR after he left and realized how bare the cupboards were. He was working with little talent and depth but still managed to pull out 5-8 wins a season, which is okay compared to the dumpster fires we’ve endured since. He’s not a star HC, but he was competent.

He just kept chopping wood.

The names that seem to come up most often among the talking heads are Jim Caldwell, Doug Pederson, and Byron Leftwich.

The theme I hear most often from the talking heads is that the next guy should have NFL head coaching experience.

Is no one concerned that the Eagles kinda fell apart once Frank Reich left?

My Philly friends say Pederson is pretty egotistical and tends to alienate players when things fall apart.  Sounds like Urban lite to me.

1. Shad's very limited football knowledge comes more from the college side than NFL side. He had known about Urban being a rock star college coach before he ever bought the Jags, so the name cache meant a lot to him.

2. He knew that hiring Urban would bring attention, headlines, and ticket sales...which it did at first. Urban said in his day 1 press conference that he wanted to make a Jaguars ticket the hottest ticket in the league, and he saw Urban as a path toward that. He wanted style over substance.

Dilla brought up Byron’s name again today FWIW.

Mike Tomlin

(This post was last modified: 12-19-2021, 12:52 PM by ChrisJagBoy.)

Part of me really wants to go Eric B.

But if you want my honest opinion, I feel like it's going to be Doug Pederson and I'm not mad about it.

I'm curious why Tomlin/Caroll keep being brought up as if they are about to be available?

With that being said, i'd take both in a heartbeat.

I keep seeing his name come up. Why? I have not seen anything leaked or mentioned about him departing or being fired from Pittsburgh this year. Also, given the Rooney's long standing history of being patient with above average to excellent coaching he's yet to have a slump like Chuck and Bill did before he was their third coach hired since 1969.

They'll have to replace an oft injured and beat up Roethlisberger who was on the decline now over the last three years due to those injuries and age. However, the Rooney's will more than likely figure that out within the next two years. I could see them honestly making a move to gain Minshew off Philadelphia's hands via trade.

Or, and I wouldn't put it past them to do this. But, if they end up really, really liking Pickett out of Pittsburgh during the combine and draft process? They might come up and get him and try to start him right away like they did with Roethlisberger. Given how competitive that division is right now with Burrow, Jackson and Mayfield they probably don't want to wait around to develop a QB like they did with Rudolph as Rudolph has not really worked out for them.

I saw on ESPN one of the commentors said their first phone call would be to Sean Payton....that would be interesting.

Sean Peyton would be cool.

Sean Payton's departure from NOLA seems more likely than Mike Tomlin's departure from Pittsburgh. I could see Payton jumping ship to come here to work with Lawrence, Robinson and Etienne. He would probably keep Joe Cullen around as the defensive coordinator as well. Just depends on whether or not he can find a guy that he can work with at the General Management position.

Sean Payton? In a heartbeat.

In my personal opinion, Leftwhich should be our new HC.

Agreed. He's a coach that you know for a FACT will utilize not only Robinson, but, Etienne. He's very creative, likes to mix it up, doesn't shy away from attacking all three levels of a defense. Whether it's a deep shot downfield, underneath to a RB or TE, a screen play, a ground attack, short and simple, etc.

You name it. He does it. If there's any coach that can get Lawrence to an elite level? It's him. No question in my mind about it. The biggest question would be who do you have running the show on defense? Does he keep Cullen or does he convince Dennis Allen to come over with him? And, then, who the hell is the General Manager in this case?

This is one of the very, very few exceptions where I am okay with Khan hiring the coach prior to hiring the General Manager. Cleveland got away with it with Stefanski as well. It's worked out for them for now.
