Let's look at past hires made by GM Trent Baalke. Maybe things won't be so bad.

Jim Tomsula. Lasted... a year. Went 5-11
Chip Kelly. (WHY?) Lasted... a year. Went 2-14
The owner wanted Harbaugh. To be fair, the owner also wanted Meyer. But he accepted both. Clashed with Harbaugh.

Yeah, no. It's worse. Way worse.

Maybe Baalke will be a blind squirrel and make a good HC hire, but I doubt it. I don't trust that man's judgement about anything.

I was all excited for the team's future. Khan will get the message when season ticket sales tank.

Our HC hire will be awful if Khan keeps him around. Criss off any senior guys like Doug or Caldwell.

If true, we'll end up with a coordinator turned HC with lots of ambition and no experience.

The Bears and Raiders jobs are more attractive than this one IMO. I just can't see us getting a top echelon candidate. As fans, we are over-valuing Trevor, draft position and cap space as bait to lure a top candidatr.

We had a chance of being one of the top jobs available, but with one of the most reknowned snakes still at the helm we fall off a cliff. Maybe someone who is desperate like Caldwell will accept because there aren't any other options. He was the guy we were linked to that I wanted least (not that I hated him), but at this point that might be the best case scenario.

I don't think anyone on the list is an option now. Leftwich might be but if he knows football like it is reported, he probably knows to say no thanks to an interview. I really don't know who the options are at this point because everyone will say no if Baalke is there.

Yep, if Baalke is making personnel choices then no coach worth their salt will come here.

In a few years Trevor will probably end up in Indy, or New Orleans, or on some other team to be their Drew Brees.

I don't think you should go that far. I think they should clean house, hire a GM, and let that person pick the coach who should then hire the assistants. Fire Baalke today and let's get started.

It went from a zero chance a week ago, to highly likely now if they do indeed keep Baalke.

Not that either is likely to be available, but if either Payton or Tomlin were let go, they jump to top of list.

Did a little more research on Pederson. Apparently he was never allowed to picks his assistants and it was his insistence on finally naming his own OC that was the breaking point. He wanted Press Taylor (Zac Taylor's brother) who is now an Offensive Asst with Indy.  Pederson is said to be assembling a staff and that Press Taylor will be his OC wherever he goes.  So Pederson likes Taylor, and obviously Reich does.

Makes you think that if he is assembling a staff and has picked an OC, he probably has a DC in mind, and that would be the end of Cullen.

I like that he took a year off and assessed his coaching.

So Pederson is my #1 - I think they chances of success are high and failure low.  But he is from Washington State and said coaching at home would be appealing so if you want Pederson, root for Carroll to be retained. 

Caldwell is a safe choice. But I think with him the chances of success is average and chance of failure low. One thing that put me off about Caldwell is age. He's 67 in a month. If it takes three years for us to be a contender he'll be 70.  His sideline demeanor worries me.  He always seemed to be in a stupor. And in his two stints as HC teams started off hot and then drifted to mediocre.  I think Caldwell could get you to 9-7.  I worry it would never go higher. Where I would like Caldwell is if you hire a first time HC, to put him in a VP position as a mentor.

With Baalke being retained supposedly, I assume Pederson, who said he can be choosy this time, will choose to go elsewhere.  No "hot" assistants, like Kellen Moore or McDaniels. We'll get one of the guys who is not about to turn down ANY HC gig.  Bevell, Caldwell, Byron.

I'll probably get bashed for this comment but Mike Mularkey doesnt seem like a bad idea.

I mean if you can add talent to the team he has shown to be somewhat a decent coach, atleast he was in Tennessee, even winning a playoff game. A coach is only as good as your roster is, I mean we've seen last year with the Patriots and Belichick...

And especially since majority of the users on this board want a good running game to compliment Lawrence, Mularkey could do that, he made DeMarco Murray at his age a top RB in Tennessee. His scheme really does QBs a favor but of course you'd have to build your team upfront to become a physical run first team with Mularkey.

We are in complete agreement, and I could definitely see this happening, which would be infinitely frustrating because of the quality of candidates reportedly interested in the job.

I just hope Baalke is given more of a cap management role, while a new head coach or a 3rd guy is given more control over personnel/drafting.

I'm tired of rooting for a losing team that can't even get out of it's own way. Retaining Baalke would mean more dysfunction and more terrible draft picks. How could a person be so completely inept at his job and still be retained?

I think it’s still low. He’s going to go 0-4 barring the unexpected. This isn’t like Marrone in 2016 improving the team immediately in a short audition. 

I will say we will end up hiring some unknown linebackers coach who will flame out
