Monroe Traded

Also looks like the Steelers got Levi Brown for a conditional 7th.

And the Cardinals are picking up the bulk of his salary.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Quote:i wonder how theyre going to spin this tomorrow lol.
They will ignore it....it pretty much wrecks their damage control attempts.....I'm kinda worried that this trade made sense to Caldwell in the first place...and we're picking up the bulk of his salary for this year on top of that.....

They basically got for Monroe what the Chiefs were offered for Albert. It's called market value.

If true then that would be extremely disappointing. We also hear reports that other teams declined to make an offer (Arizona).

I have to believe that there are other factors at play with this trade. Maybe it was reluctance to adapt to the new scheme? Maybe Monroe has been displaying bad attitude  or bad practice/meeting habits? Not displaying veteran leadership qualities? You hear Caldwell and Bradely talk culture change a lot so maybe he just was not jiving.

We will never really know.

I believe it was this combined with there being plenty of ways to fill RT this year via FA and the draft. I just believe it was both the player not wanting to be here and the right team offering something instead of Monroe walking for nothing.

According to various tweets, there were at least two teams (Az and Baltimore) that had contact with the team regarding Monroe.  Az did not want him.

Now if this tweet to which you refer is true, then there may be something to the not getting maximum value for Monroe.

But even if it is true, based upon his play, he wouldn't have gotten what people wanted.

It was only bad if he was in the long term plans, which is now obvious he was not. Otherwise no harm, no foul.

Pretty much. It's not a hard concept to grasp. We got value for a player who wouldn't have been here next year.

Moan and groan about value all you want but the fact of the matter is none of us know what the true value is. All we know is Monroe got us a 4th and 5th while Brown got Arizona a conditional 7th.

Quote:Fair enough, I won't deny the issues we have at LB either. But let's go back 10 months you have the option to either upgrade Alualu or Knighton who do you want replaced?

That's my point..............

Then you have to put some blame on your guy Gene for that.  He had the opportunity to re-sign Pot Roast before the last year of his deal, and didn't.  He had the opportunity to cut Tyson Alualu.  He didn't.

HA !!! I was listening to Pittsburgh sports talk radio this morning (The Fan) and they stated Levi Brown sucks.  The good news is that he's better than what they have in Mike Adams.  Apparently they hate him in Arizona because they wasted a #5 draft pick on him in 2007.

This trade cannot be compared to the Eugene Monroe trade.  With decent coaching, which Eugene has not had, he has a lot more potential ---- this year, we don't even know what kind of blocking scheme we are using.  Monroe has to be ecstatic to get out of this mess.

Quote:I don't think soft is the right word to use there, he's not weak or anything like that. Monroe's really more of a finesse LT how will beat you with good footwork and getting lower, not necessarily by overpowering you. Zone blocking schemes need more aggressive players who are willing and able to throw themselves at the opposing team by cut blocking and mauling tackles work better in that scheme.
It would be concerning if part of the motivation for his trade was the fact he didn't like to cut block.

If they are trying to build a line that zone blocks using cut blocking techniques then they are building a line that will likely be obsolete in the next couple of seasons given the pressure being put on the NFL to outlaw that technique. They may have to turn around and rebuild the line all over again in the next few years.

The more I hear about the trade the more it feels like too little thought was put into it.

I have never been one to be over critical of the FO and I will give him ample time to do his thing just like the rest of our GMs, but Caldwell is giving me an uneasy feeling.

He is giving me an impulsive and reckless feeling, kind of like a gambler, but not like the smart ones who know how to play their odds and win poker tournaments. More like the foolish kind who are willing to play poor odds because they think they are better than the system and end up loosing their house.

It is funny to think what we got for Monroe wouldn't even be enough to have drafted our punter.

As to the part in bold, we are in complete agreement here.  That had lingered in my mind when I heard they were switching to a zone blocking scheme.

As to your closing thought, I'm not sure I'm there.

If the tweet about not shopping Monroe around is true, then that is concerning, but we didn't have too much to lose by rearranging a roster that was almost completely devoid of talent.

To me, taking a step back was not entirely unexpected.

Like I said it is only a feeling, although I can't say I have had that feeling with any of our other GMs this early on.

Then again, maybe I have just grown more leery.

Given the misery of the last season and a quarter, perfectly understandable.

What football gods did we upset to deserve this?  How many small goats must be sacrificed to appease them?

What laws of karma did we voilate for it to exact its vengeance upon us so?  When will it stop?

Apparently Caldwell has Ray Rice in his fantasy football league and is looking to solidify his roster.
