2023 Offseason Roster Moves

Key is the first major loss from our defense in FA.

Jags need a plan to replace his pressures.

Slay was released. he first came to Philly while Pederson was still HC. Idk how well he'd fit in a nickel CB role. He'd be an upgrade over Williams on the outside but then we can't move Williams back inside because he's not good there and then we'd have money tied up in a player who doesn't have a spot to fit. If Slay can play inside, that would be a nice addition.

Slay is strictly an outside corner. Although he's a very good player, he will cost too much and he doesn't really help the team this year.

Kind of what I figured.

Still waiting on the Mayor to come back

Yea, what I was amazed at is how long it took him to twist the conversation so he could attack Treavor. (I believe that is his sole purpose in life) I do apologize to everyone else on the board for playing with the troll.

Imagine being dumb enough to think an organization wouldn't prioritize cap space for a franchise QB who is the face of the organization and says all the right things -

 - compared to an outspoken malcontent DB who shows up in a brinks truck to practice and continually alienates players, coaches and FO figures.

Anyway -
I'm very curious to see what happens on the DL and whether some scheme adjustment and more inside snaps for Walker are part of the equation.
This seems to be the current FA hot topic with the loss of Key

Definitely. This was a big failing on the team's part, losing out on Key. Walker really needs to step up this year and justify his #1 pick, and we're going to have to find someone else on top of that.

The loss of Smoot will hurt as well.  Smoot and Key were our 2 best pass rushers at times last year

Smoot had a nice 6 or 7 game stretch where he was getting good pressure. (week 7-14)

Not sure why you are assuming he's gone, though.
With his injury, the Jags are probably the front runner to sign him if they trust he'll come back strong.

We could still re-sign Smoot. Even if just for a one year deal considering his injury.

Well he got hurt week 15 so it would have been kind of hard to do it after week 14.  We shall see

No chance he's ready to contribute for the first 8 weeks of the season. It's a torn Achilles. His play might never be the same and he likely starts the year on the PUP.

Exactly, he may even go into the season unsigned at this point

Yeah -

The standard prognosis is 6 months to recover from surgery (late June/early July) and 2-3 more months to regain full mobility (October)

He could be ready by November.

This is part of the reason why I said we'd be the front runner to sign him. He'll be cheap and could be solid rotational help by Nov/Dec.
Not many other teams are looking to chance it with that scenario.

All this talk about losing players on D and trying to replace them is a bunch of clanging cymbals to me.
The Jaguars priorities should be
1. Making sure Trevor stays upright and giving him a chance to lead a top 5 offense in the league for years to come,
2. Winning games in 2023.

Priority 1 is much more important than priority 2. If we don't do enough to build the o line Trevor needs, he will want to leave and might not sign his extension. We need to think like we are the Cleveland cavaliers and this is 2009.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.

Darius Slay is from Brunswick, GA, which is around 70 miles North of Jacksonville. If the Jaguars have serious interest in signing Slay and make a competitive contract offer, playing relatively close to home, and on a legit Super Bowl contender. could be the difference in the Jaguars landing Slay's services.

The only issue is what Cleatwood and I were talking about earlier. If Slay is strictly an outside corner, is he THAT much of an upgrade over Williams to justify the cost of having him not play full time since he struggles at nickel as well

I wanted Slay when he was last a free agent, but the cap bargain way for us to handle CB is to keep our current duo and draft a nickel.

Shoot Let’s get Bryce. We can’t rely on just the draft to make us true contenders

By renewing our own players, you could say that we have dipped into FA...we just chose the devils we knew.

But sure, that one guy is gonna make us contenders, right?
