This isn't money on an open market. Unless you can find someone that will trade a higher pick next year for a pick this year the value is nothing more than an arbitrary number.

 

If no one is willing to give you return on a dollar there is no time value. Your dollar today will equal a dollar tomorrow.

 

The assumption being made as to how time value relates to draft picks is that picks are traded on an open market where anyone who wants to can trade their current pick for a future pick a round higher and that all trades are made at this rate. If that were the case, then yes, the time value model would apply. You would have a set discount rate to calculate the future value.

 

But it isn't an open market and there isn't a guarantee that anyone is willing to give you anything of greater value for your current pick much less the assumed value of a round higher pick the next year. Therefore there is no applicable discount rate to calculate a time value so you can't say a pick this year is worth a pick a round higher next year. That is a faulty assumption.

 

Draft picks only act like money when they are exchanged like money and the rates at which they are exchanged vary widely. Nice attempt by those people to try and connect the two but their premise is flawed.

Well, it has been my experience watch draft day trades, reading the articles, reviewing what folks have said, that the general valuation over time is that this year's 4th is equivalent to next years third. Of course it is an open market in that whenever a buyer and seller want, they can exchange, so not surea what you are talking about in that regard. Finally, if we want to talk about fungibility the picks we got are far more valuable than a compensatory pick. Compensatory picks are obviously not applicable in an open market by their restrictions.

Not with the amount of holes on this team.

 

Pittsburgh and NYG have elite QBs, yet they don't have enough (even with more talented teams than ours around them) to overcome all their problems.  Both have the same record as we do even with outstanding veteran QBs.

 

Folks are grossly underestimating how truly lacking of talent we are at all 22 positions.  Fixing the most important one still leaves us well short of where we need to be.

 

That's true, but while we aren't a QB away from making the playoffs, I think we are a QB away from being a competitive team.


Not just any QB though.  Can't expect to put in a backup QB and see them succeed.  We saw that with Luke McCown.  

 

And then we need to fix the O-line a bit more in the off-season and through the draft.  I think this team can be a 6-10 team next year though.  Nothing to be overly excited for -- but for a team that could go 0-16 this year, that's a major improvement and a step in the right direction.

Yeah you can't use compensatory picks as a package deal to move up in the draft. Something beats nothing. If our guy can actually draft depth and starters give him more picks.

I'm conflicted by this trade but knowing there are Shermans' and in the 5 round give me hope. I agree with the notion that we received two picks for a guy who wasn't going to resign with us. And seeing what the chiefs offer was it seems to be on par for the value Monroe had.

I would agree with that, assuming we changed nothing else.  With 10 picks and FA, I would hope they did more than that.  But yeah, the Steelers are 0-4, but they also scored 32 points in their last loss, which is more than we've put up through 4 games combined. 

 

Oh, how I wish I could watch our team score 32 points in a game.

Meester was the 33rd ranked C last year and Mack was ranked 4th

He let pretty good & rather inexpensive players such as Cox/ Knighton walk, yet retains Marcedes Lewis who is well overpaid and gives you very little. Now, also seems to be injury prone...

 

Then he hires a defensive head coach, in an era that is vastly offensive now, and will only likely trend further in that direction, given the climate for concussions and protecting the players...

 

Now he trades a young player at a premium position for a return that is low value. If you are going to trade a player like that - thats one thing, but you don't do so unless its really worth it to the team to do so. I don't see a 4th/ 5th round pick as something that makes me say - oh yeah - we can't pass THAT up.....

 

Now Caldwell is saying that thats pretty much it - that he has no intention of making any more trades :wacko:  well, if you're gonna pretty much waive the white flag with the Monroe deal, then why the hell not just go all out and get what you can for the remaining veterans that have some value and stock up on picks for 2014?....

 

Thats 4 points now that I have taken issue with Caldwell's decisions.
