Wow, I actually like all these signings.
Savage>>>>>>>>>>> Jenkins I like Davis for that kind of money Just need 1 or 2 more solid IOL 1 good WR and IDL I am a fan, not a cheerleader. Josh should probably wind up getting more than that if it's a straight up deal. 1 player getting $30 million per year, they better not miss or get hurt. You could have 2 starting DEs at $15 million. I know the cap is insane now and you have to pay it but just hard to give up that much to 1 player. My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.
Still got some holes to fill and Josh to sort out but some solid business today. Morse was a nice addition and like the Davis, Darby and Savage signings. Hopefully add some Dline help tomorrow but did a good job filling the holes with some good players.

Impressions from day 1 of free agency:
1. Jaguars addressed their needs at center, safety, cornerback, wide receiver, punt returner and left guard. The contracts were all very reasonable given the over-priced nature of the free agent market. 2. Morse is a big upgrade at center and Savage is an upgrade at safety. Duvernay and Darby should replace Agnew and Williams with no drop-off. 3. Gabe Davis is the biggest wild-card. On the plus side, he gives them the legitimate deep threat that was lacking. His inconsistency and disappointing overall production are minuses. 4. It appears Baalke/Pederson feel that only replacing one offensive lineman is enough. If Scherff stays healthy and Cleveland plays like he did in Minnesota, the line has the potential to be average- a huge improvement from the past two seasons. 5. It is likely that Zay Jones will return to the team as Ridley will be too costly. A receiving corps of Kirk, Jones, Davis, Engram, Duvernay and Cooks would be more than sufficient to begin the season. A true number 1 receiver is not needed when you have several very good options. The improvement expected on the offensive line should greatly help the running game as well as Lawrence's production at quarterback. 6. Interior defensive pass rush is the obvious number 1 need followed by edge rusher. It's unlikely that the Jaguars have the money to sign a real difference-maker at these positions in free agency. Potential lower-priced guys would be Da'Quan Jones at nose tackle and Jose Uche as designated pass rusher. 7. The 1st round of the draft is now wide open. Defensive tackle (Murphy, Newton), Edge rusher (Verse, Latu, Turner), cornerback (Mitchell, Wiggins, Arnold, DeJean, Rakestraw) and wide receiver (Thomas Jr., trade up for Odunze/Nabers) are all in play. 8. Potential targets in round 2 would be Rube Orhorhoro and Kris Jenkins at defensive tackle, Darius Robinson and Adisa Isaac at Edge if these positions aren't further addressed in free agency. Overall, Jaguars fans have to be very pleased after today. There are still many uncertainties for next season (offensive line being number 1) which won't be answered until the 2024-25 season begins. I think this year's starters are set. They just signed Cleveland and Morse. Scherff was renegotiated to a contract that I understand guarantees his 2024 salary. Harrison isn't going anywhere. The only one even conceivably on the table would be Cam, but if they were going to cut him, I think they would have already done it. That's very likely to be our starting five. You can always upgrade depth, but I'm not sure that's necessarily going to happen either. The Jaguars have Walker Little as the swing tackle. Fortner and Tugboat are inexpensive depth at center and guard. Hance, just re-signed, has the versatility to play all positions except center. I could easily see the Jaguars staying pat with those 9 players. You can never have too much depth on the offensive line. Even though their starters seem set, I could see them adding at least one lineman who'd be good value as early as round 3. Tanor Bortolini and Christian Mahogany are 2 players that could eventually become starters after being developed.

I expect we use 2 of our first 5 picks on the O-line. The approach on the o-line this year is from the learning our brain trust did last year. We have 5 solid guys to go into the next season for the line now. Additionally, we have a really good option at swing tackle. Problem is they have only short term plugged the hole. The o-line pipeline is broken. What we have behind these 6 are basically just warm bodies. This is not new it has been that way for years. Sure we have an untested rookie in 6th round pick coming off injury. Sure we signed a warm body that is very versatile (Hance). What they need are at least 2 good nasty rookies to develop because I see them needing at least one of them to start next year.
A new broom always sweeps clean.

If Baalke doesn't get the Jags their #1 receiver I'm going to join the Baalke out brigade. I'm thinking the only reason they didn't keep Ridley was because they wanted a George Pickens like player to grow with Trevor. Someone big and fast. It may not be traditionally what Baalke does, but hopefully everyone can learn on the job and get better at what he/she does. The Jags need another receiver. A good slot corner can be gotten in the 2nd round.

Brandon Scherff is no longer that dude. Next season I want him gone. I wouldn't be surprised to see them go Oline in round 1 or 2 then just let them battle it out in camp and see who their best 5 are. If we add another then we have some depth for injuries and hopefully some competition for spots gets some better performances. Scherff needs an heir apparent waiting in the wings when he gets hurt. I'd be looking at guards in the 2nd/3rd -and even better if they are C/G capable. We still don't know what their intention and desires are at tackle. Maybe they draft a RT, move Anton to left and make a cut or trade with one of the others. The depth last year was miserable and there has been tons of talk about "competition." I hope they add at least one more lineman via the draft. |
