Its like he seems surprised that contracts expire or something, and replaces FAs with more FAs, all the while wasting draft picks on redundant positions.

I will say he does seem to do well in the first round, but is terrible beyond that.

Yeah, I get that these folks are upset about Ridley, but it's been a productive couple of days around here. The team got better at it's worst and everywhere else is similar for smaller dollars. And yeah, we need Baalke to get his head out of his [BLEEP] and draft well this year, but when the targets are this small (CB/DT/Edge/WR) and options so numerous I think even he can do ok this year. We'll see, but people were [BLEEP] about how bad we did in free agency the day before we could even agree to deals with anyone...so expect to see more of the same the next 4 or 5 weeks.

Agreed.  We actually got about 5 years younger and marginally faster with our outside free agents while spending a little less.  I believe not signing Ridley may open up a lot of interesting possibilities.  The remaining gaps we need to close in this roster probably are best NOT addressed thru free agents and in the draft.

I've seen the bolded statement from a couple of posters, and it makes NO sense.  What you're saying is that Trevor can't have a good receiver, because otherwise he won't read the field and will pass to a covered WR.  The decision to target and throw a pass is the QBs alone.  Now giving the QB more time with a quality Oline is legitimate, blaming a bad throw because the WR is the "most talented" just leads to having an offense with no quality weapons.

I think it happened once in the early weeks of the season where he seemed to be trying to force it to Ridley.  I didn't necessarily see it the rest of the season, but the narrative has stuck for some.

I've seen lots of folks expressing some version or perspective on this stuff. 

The things that I saw contributing to these "notions" were:

• They had to figure out how to use Ridley at the X position when he is really a Z receiver
  
• That required some adjustments and they called his number from the press box often in a few different games ostensibly to find what works - where to adjust
  
• That gave the impression of Lawrence "forcing" him the ball IMO
  
• Pederson has long shown a readiness to pick on lopsided matchups -  and in games where they thought Ridley had his guy - they would again call his number readily 
  

I don't think there was actually some undercurrent of forcing him the ball from TL or from the press box. Just an offense trying to figure out the best way to utilize its receiving talent while dealing with piss poor protection up front.

In the draft, there's no need to reach or desperately trade up. I'm all for picking Thomas or Bowers if one is there at #17. I'd also be happy with a trade down to get Coleman and extra picks or Legette in round 2. Other than that, I want Baalke to seek BAP at DL, OL, and CB. Move up and down to pick players in the right spots. No other positions should be drafted.   

Ideal draft is:

3 DL -- one edge, one penetrating DT, one beefy NT
1 CB -- potential outside starter only, no slot guys
2 OL -- potential starters only, all positions in play
1 WR/TE -- someone who can make an impact in year 1 and develop into a stud

Targets per game

 Ridley.    8.0
Kirk.         7.7
Engram.  8.4
ZJones.   7 1

Looks evenly spread out to me.

If they really want a Ridley, draft Ricky Pearsall. He's more athletic, 6 years younger, and a WR with higher upside who we can possibly get in the 2nd round. Ridley and Pearsall are similar players with Pearsall being a lot cheaper

Spotrac has his market value higher than Ridley's probably due to his age. I can't imagine paying Ridley's contract or higher and giving up trade compensation for the privilege.  If it winds up being less than Ridley's, sure I'd consider it while giving up no more than a 3rd.  Which would essentially be giving the niners the top compensation they'd get in compensatory picks if they have no intention to re-sign him and let him walk next offseason.  I don't think I'd do the 2nd even though I know some other team might.  Maybe Cam Robinson straight up for him?  They need Tackle help.

I don't think they need to spend big money on a receiver personally unless they really don't want to go WR early in the draft so they can fill other holes with those picks. Just talking through the possibilities out loud is all.
