The first was "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood". For me, Tarantino films are love 'em or hate 'em (Pulp Fiction is one of the best movies evah) but this one I had to give up on after about 45 minutes. It's a mess and DiCaprio and Pitt have zero chemistry. The other one was "Oppenheimer". Chris Nolan is as up and down as Tarantino IMO, and while this one wasn't terrible, the....pacing.....was.....just....so.....slow. I gave up on it after about an hour. Also I guess I was disappointed that it was a written as a brooding character study. I was expecting something more along the lines of "Fat Man and Little Boy". Oh well.

Next up:

"One Love", a movie based on Bob Marley's life. I fully expect to enjoy that one. ;-)
"Asteroid City", Wes Anderson so I expect to enjoy that one as well.

You got much further into Oppenheimer than I did. I think I lasted 20 minutes and that's being generous.

Well on the plus side, we know what to turn on next time we need a cure for insomnia. Big Grin

I saw the movie before reading the book it was based on, American Prometheus. I didn't like the movie then and cared for it even less after I read the book. How they thought they could compress such a detailed and wide-ranging biography (which took two writers 25 years to research and write) into a movie is beyond me. It was abysmal.

I saw a very long documentary about the life of Robert Oppenheimer that was way more interesting and entertaining than that movie.

Lol yeah. For as many rave reviews critics gave it I just know they have to be getting paid on the side by studios to write those reviews.

It’s so damn hot outside I decided to watch a movie.  For some reason I turned on Gone With the Wind.  I don’t think I’ve ever watched it from beginning to end.

I will say one thing I’ve noticed.  They really overdo the background music in old films.

I watched A Time to Kill last night. It came out in 1996 starring Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock, Samuel L Jackson and other well knowns. I thought it was a great movie then and still do today. It also reminds me of how things were before 9/11 and OEF and OIF. It's crazy to think 9/11 happened just 5 years later but I digress.

The one thing that drove me nuts is Joel Schumacher (director) had everyone sweating all the time. John Grisham (author of the book it's based on) even asked Schumacher if he knew folks in Mississippi had air conditioning. It's known in the entertainment industry as the sweatiest movie ever made. Lol.

Anyway, if you have a couple of hours and Paramount+ give it a go. It really is a good story.

And of all the actors who are still around Matthew is the one who looks the most different. Age has been his friend. He almost doesn't look himself sometimes. Some folks have to grow into their looks and he is one of them.

The Shining is one of my favorite all time movies. This video does a great job of breaking down the meaning of the movie and explaining what Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick were trying to achieve with their interpretations.

Kubrick's version is immensely better, in my opinion. The book wasn't really all that great.

I got about halfway through the book and gave up.. I agree, not very good.. Kinda saddened me. I loved Cujo, It, A Buick 8, ect ect.. The Shining was pretty bad.

Stephen King felt the movie adaptation missed the main point of the novel which very much focused on Danny, the little boy. The movie was more about Jack Nicholson and the visual spectacle. I thought they were both good but they were different. Have you seen or read the sequel (Dr. Sleep)? I thought the book was outstanding. The movie was good too and sticks a little closer to the overall gist of the book.

Just watched Deadpool 3. Just like the other Deadpools, it has the signature dark humor. I enjoyed it.

I saw the first two Deadpools.  Loved them both.  Very funny.  Haven't seen the third one yet.

I saw two very good older movies last week.

Elmer Gantry
The Man Who Would Be King

Both excellent.

We checked out “The Watchers”. It was written and directed by M Night Shamala’s daughter. It had some of the vibe of her dad’s movies. But she took it in her own direction. I liked it overall but the ending was a bit drawn out. I’ve heard that people who read the novel didn’t like the movie much but I thought it was fine.
