For my own personal tastes, just streaming through apps is the best and most cost effective option for me but I can see that may not be the case for others.

Bumped due to the latest xfinity increase. The Tablo DVR interest me a lot since I have TV in my shed, on the deck and in the garage for sports as I am piddling on whatever project I might be currently working on.

I have heard and I think also read, that xfinity doesn't really want to do TV. They just want to do internet. This is borne out by the way they didn't do the usual begging when we I cancelled them about 6 months ago. I kept the internet access, and went with Youtube TV, and it's been good.

How do watch the Jags games?  Does Youtube TV carry local channels or do you use an antenna?

YTTV has local channels and NFLN in their base price. Depending on where you are, that might mean you have to go to a sporps bar whenever we host an NFC team.  Stupid local carrier, thinking anyone in Florida cares about the Failcons. Wallbash

Sigh...  I wish that we had affordable and reliable internet service in my area.  Our "internet service" is a wifi hotspot using 4G, and we are limited as far as bandwith every month.  The best that we can do is satellite TV which has actually been decent, though the channel selection in the base package is horrible.  Also, last season we had no choice but to use YTTV for some of the Jaguars games since Dish Network canceled their contract with the local FOX affiliate (COX communications if I remember right).  At least they came to an agreement on a new contract so this season shouldn't be too much of an issue.

I need to do a cost analysis to see if I can justify switching to Starlink/YTTV.  Everyone in our area that has Starlink loves it.

UPDATE

Pulled the trigger and ordered Starlink.  They dropped the initial cost from $599 to $299 with a monthly cost of $120.  Once the install is in place and working I can get rid of Dish Network and use whichever streaming service that I decide on.

By my calculations it will be less expensive (after the initial cost) monthly to have good, reliable internet service.  Once I add a streaming service my cost will be around the same amount as my current cost with Verizon hotspot/Dish Network, perhaps a few dollars more.  To have unlimited, reliable high speed internet access is worth it to me for the switch.

Well after 4 hours of negotiations between xfinity and ATT wound up saving $120/month and still married to xfinity.

Yeah, if you're going to stay with them, you have to play this game every time the discount period ends.  Sometimes you have to actually walk away and they will call you back 3 to 4 weeks later with a price you are more comfortable paying.  That happened to me once at least many years ago when I still had a TV package from them.

I have a friend with Starlink and he seems to like it. His speeds are quite a bit slower than mine and he pays quite a bit more than me, but if you don't have other options I'm sure its worth it.

My dad lives out in the boonies. Hes too cheap to get starlink or any kind of satellite internet. The phone company forced him to end his dialup when they made the switch years ago. Somehow he talked them into setting him up with the dsl in the area, problem being the dsl's "range" is about a mile short from my dads house. They still ran it for him, his numbers are horrible, but its enough to load up a few news sites. Majority of us grew up in the dialup ages, boy am I glad we are past that. The sound of the modem connecting on dial up still haunts me lol

I'm impatient while waiting for it to show up, but I already used the app to see how well the signal should be.  According to the app it should work just fine.  I also ordered an adapter so that I can use the existing mount for the Dish Network satellite dish already on my house and not have to install a new one.  My only issue is going to be climbing the ladder to remove the Dish satellite dish and install the Starlink dish.  I may end up hiring someone to do it for me. My agility/stability is not what it used to be when I was young and I hate getting up on ladders.

Took the next step and cancelled Dish Network starting on Monday (couldn't risk not seeing the Jaguars game).  According to the tracking from FedEx I should get the dish and router Monday.  I have all of the other parts to do the install.

I'm kind of surprised that Dish didn't want any of their equipment back.  I may hack the receiver and see if I can make it into a DVR.  It's nothing more than a Linux computer.  I did something like that years ago with a Tivo that made it into a DVR and a media server where I could access and watch whatever was on it from anywhere on my home network.

Yes, I am a geek.

Got my Star Link set up temporarily (The "dish" is sitting on my front lawn at the moment).  So far I am quite pleased with it.  Even though it's just a temporary setup I am getting way better (more than double) the speeds that we got with our Verizon hotspot.  Tomorrow, weather permitting I'll climb the ladder and install it permanently on the same mount where my Dish Network satellite dish was.  Being raised up that high should only improve the quality of the connection.

I also have YoutubeTV and Amazon Prime configured on my TV's so it looks like we are set for television viewing.  YTTV also offers "cloud DVR" service so I can record anything that I might not be able to watch live.

It's amazing to me, a real geek how well Star Link works.  I watched a video explaining how it works, and it was almost "over my head".

By the way, if anyone is considering getting Star Link, PM me and I'll give you my info.  If I refer anyone both that person and I will get a free month (a $120 value).  I am not pushing the service and I certainly don't work for Star Link or SpaceX, it's just one of the things offered with my new service.

Have you experienced any dropouts during rainy weather? How about data caps? I may eventually be moving to a more rural area and might look into it.
