ROKU

#41

I foresee a day in the not too distant future when all of our "TV" content will arrive over a wireless internet connection, somehow using satellites.

Bought a Roku over the weekend. Just started exploring.  I don't think I'll ever cut the satellite, but I may play some more with the Roku and doing a home DVR.  But what kind of blew my mind was watching a 1080p movie from Amazon streaming.  It was the best picture I'd ever seen.

If you were looking into dvr you could have went the htpc route and skipped the roku Big Grin.  Windows Media Center has the best pvr interface I've every used.

I've played with WMC a bit to record some off-the-air as a test.  But not so sure it's as good as Roku for internet content,

If you don't have one, I suggest you google it right now, go to Walmart and buy one.

I got one for Christmas and I swear I don't think I have seen the light of day since. They are pretty cheap too. I think the most expensive one is close to $120. They have them for $70. AWESOME.

I've had one for a couple of years. The hardware for a dedicated streamer is just ok. The big advantage is the roku channel store which brings together a huge variety of sources and apps. Where a smart TV may offer half a dozen streaming options, Roku gives you access to hundreds of options. Of course you can watch most of the sources on your computer too but youd have to find them all and manage them all and where's the fun in that? Then again for people who just stream netflix, roku is probably overkill.

I have a smart TV so I'm assuming ROKU wouldn't give me any added benefit then what I already have, correct?

I bought a smart TV recently only to realize the ROKU interface was way better in every way and have no plans on using it.

Quote:I've had a Roku for a couple of years. My only gripe with the newer models is that only the most expensive one has an ethernet connection. That's not an issue if your wireless connection is strong, but I have DSL, and it actually becomes an issue if several devices are sharing the wireless connection or, in  my case, the wireless signal must pass through 2 10" thick white oak log walls.

With so many smart TVs hitting the market at decent prices, I'll be going that route in the future.

I install tv and internet in people's houses and have seen a lot of smart Tvs. The best in my opinion is the higher end samsung Tvs. It's the only one I can think of off hand that has a real browser. When I got my Vizio I thought it had one but didn't.

Don't get me wrong I love the Vizio for the price but I really wanted that browser function.

Then perhaps this product is not meant for you.

Spent the last couple of months on roku and no cable. Without a cable or satellite connection you are limited in what you can do with the roku. We managed to stay occupied with Netflix and Hulu plus but you can forget finding current seasons of Tv shows. I ended up paying for walking dead on amazon and streaming it through the roku but at 2.99 an episode you can quickly negate what your savings from no cable bill might be. When we moved further out of town and where forced to go with satralie Internet and data caps I gabe the roku to family, no more streaming for me.

It's a viable option for anyone that can either live without current seasons / live news or is willing to go online and watch that stuff via live stream sites (not Option on roku)

Well I'm refering specifically to streaming content availability in this case. The smart tvs I've looked at in the past year or so seem to offer the common streaming services but not a whole lot of them.

Amazon TV would be interesting because of the games.  Can you still hook it up to a Smart TV or does it have to be a "dumb" tv?
