You can't put the borders back. Ukraine continually attacked the areas for 8 years because they want to ethically cleanse them of Russians. The people don't want to go back to Ukraine and be bombed again. They have already voted to leave.
You need to understand the long history on why these people hate each other. The recent history back to Stalin's actions explains a lot but the issues go much further back.

Ukraine needs fair elections since alternative parties have been banned, martial law was declared, and the election was canceled. Repeating stuff that is already in this long thread but one of the biggest reasons the war happened was because the US and NATO caused multiple color revolutions led by Victoria Nuland. She is an evil woman and at the head of a lot of the world issues.

If NATO stops pushing closer to Russia and the US leaves things alone, peace may be able to be reached. It would have been reached long ago if Biden had allowed it.

Ukraine has always been viewed as a backwater by Russians. They think the people are hicks and their language is hick talk. Remember the languages share a lot of words in common. The Czars deliberately kicked Ukrainians out of their cities and resettled the cities such as Kyiv with Russians which reinforced this stereotype. At the same time, English capitalists were showing up hoping to start factories, and the Czars decided that the area now know as the Donbass would be a good spot. The Czars made sure that the new cities springing up around the new factories were thoroughly Russian even though the countryside spoke a language more like Ukrainian at the time.
Nonetheless, when the Soviet revolution started, Ukraine fought for independence against all comers - Austria, Germany, Poland, the Russian White army, and the Red Army all tried to re-colonize Ukraine as it fought for independence. The Red Army won, unfortunately. The Soviets kept up the Czarist pattern of resettling Russians or loyal non-Russians in strategic areas far from Russia, particularly along the Dniester River and Crimea (they did this in other countries as well, all of the -stans basically). This wasn't enough though and the Soviets wanted to make Ukraine confirm even more to Russia, so they moved the border to include areas that were always Russian.
Since independence, Ukraine has indeed made efforts to assimilate these areas and force the kids to learn Ukrainian in school instead of Russian. It generally hasn't gone well. If that was the only problem we might say, sure, let Putin reclaim the land that Kruschev gave away. But that is not the only problem. Latvia has the same problem, with Russians who have always been Russian in their borders.. And Latvia is in NATO. It would set a bad example, to say the least.

That's interesting. Not to mention Ukraine was a huge food basket for Russia. The Soviets relied heavily on their Eastern European satellite states for resources and the Ukraine was their grain and petroleum source. 

From the Baltic states to the Balkan states, the heavy influence of Russian intrigue, conflict and distrust is unmistakable. I'm not as learned on early European history as I should be, but that area of the continent still hasn't entirely emerged from the tribalism which kept the western half at odds until the middle of the 20th century.

A couple reasons Putin is being like he is.

When the Soviet Union broke up and told these countries they could have self rule there was a condition. Nato was not to expand to include any of them. Whether the West promised them that I just don't know.

Putin was opposed to the break up and will if he can reunite them all, not just Ukraine.

Right or wrong depends on which side you are on. Before with Russia friendlier leaders, there wasn't a war and Ukraine and it's male population being destroyed. After the color revolution, the war was enviable as Russia was going to act at some point.

While it may be Americans doing a lot of this, I don't really see this as US vs Russia. This is the elites vs Russia. Russia is the last remaining large country without their control.
