Mettenberger Flying to Jax Thursday

#61

Quote:Just finished watching a couple highlight vids for Mettenberger.  The vid positives are he's got a strong arm and is able to move more than I thought I would see given all the statements about him being a statue.  I didn't like that in just about about every throw (in 15 minutes of cutups), he was locked on one receiver (not going through any progressions), and his release was a little slow (not nearly as slow as Leftwich) and not quite over the top to maximize his height.

Interesting guy to develop.
I hate slow releases...  Makes bad defensive backs look good sometimes and good DB's look great

Quote:Yeah he is. And Beckham reminds me of Cecil Shorts a little

Except that Beckham routinely goes up an wins jump balls. Something Cecil has done maybe twice in his career.

They did help out but his O-Line was pretty bad except for Turner

Hill is a mid-round pick.

To the smart it should be concerning.

He had all that and he still was only "meh".

No thanks. Slow at reading the field, bad hitch in his release, and damn near immobile even before he tore his ACL.

I actually hoped they'd give Mettenberger some consideration.  A good friend of mine is a former LSU player, and he still follows the program religiously.  He told me to watch this kid because he was going to be a hot prospect in the upcoming draft.  My buddy is a homer, but he's watched more LSU football than anyone I know.  He loves the guy.  I saw the same thing others have seen.  He had decent mobility, a big arm, and the propensity to lock in on receivers.  He's inconsistent at times.  His footwork isn't always the greatest.

The guy has great size, and no doubt there's a lot of potential there.  The knee injury probably makes him the 2nd QB taken by this team if he lands on the roster.  I would be surprised if he was anything more than a 3rd day pick.

If the right coach got hold of him and had the time to work with him on the issues he does have, he has the potential to be a good NFL QB.  He can make the throws, no doubt.  If he can stay out of trouble, and focus on developing his skill set, he might be a fun guy to watch.

Two QBs beat Auburn last year:

Winston

Mettenberger

ok..and?

As the other poster mentioned, with the supporting cast he had, he probably should have put up more success than he did.

As a day 3 pick, fine....anything before that would be reaching.

Didnt you like Ryan Mallet? They are pretty similar.

Mettenberger is slow as hell. Can't believe people hate everything about Bortles but would want this guy on the team regardless of the rounds they are picked in. I can't see this dude ever starting in the NFL for long.

Except that Mallett was a cokehead. Allegedly.

Bortles had a cake schedule compared to Mberger

Hey Tom Brady, Manning, and Brees are slow. They must stink.

Mallett was a better passer and more productive than Mettenberger.

I actually don't think Mallett is a better passer. They are very similar from a trait profile. Same size/athleticism (or lack thereof), similar arm talent (hate that phrase =/), both have/had semi serious off field issues, neither go through progressions well or quickly, etc.

The only real differences are Mettenberger is more accurate and doesn't force as many throws, while Mallet's mechanics/throwing motion is faster and more clean.

Both of them have ~20% chances of being franchise QBs, and Mallett's timeframe to become one is darn near over if it isn't already.
