Geno Smith was told he'd be drafted in the first round last year. 

 

Players are told a lot of things. 

Didn't Geno wind up firing his agent because he wasn't drafted first overall?

No it's not. 16-35, are you kidding? Do you know how many guys come into the draft being told that they're somewhere between 2nd and 4th-round stock, or 5th-7th?

 

The fact that he wound up being a 1st round pick still amazes me.

Teblow was drafted by a coach who, in retrospect, shared one fatal flaw with Gene Smith--he had to be the smartest guy in the room, and he had to feel like it, so he was prone to reaching on mediocre talent just to prove everyone wrong.

I'd be surprised if a team exec would fly a guy in, have dinner with him, work him out and have him sit down with coaches without telling said player where he's thinking of taking him. Doesn't mean that the GM is telling the truth. Could be (and likely is) that the GM who told McCarron he'd be going top-20 is hoping that McCarron spreads that info around and gets some sap of a GM to take him higher or trade up for him, pushing someone else down the board.

I'm not sure how the NFL personnel come to these figures, but it's probably not someone like Caldwell telling someone "I think you're worth taking in the late first round."

That doesn't apply to McCarron. What you are talking about applies to underclassmen who are thinking about coming out for the draft. 

 

And I'm glad to see that Badger thinks so highly of the Jaguars GM. Somehow I think that's what Badger would do, not Caldwell.

Until the pick is made, anyone who is eligible for the draft has the potential to be the first pick. Even McCarron.  Until the card is submitted and it's announced by the commissioner, there's no real way to know anything.  Houston could go off the reservation completely if they wanted to.  Nobody is saying McCarron will be the first pick, so relax.
