One thing to note in the highlights they showed:

 

Every bad play was with Cyp in the single high safety spot and all but one of the good ones were in the box plays where he was closer to the LOS much like Kam Chancellor. I think they wanted to see if the could handle the lone safety responsibility and thats not his strength much like it isnt for Chancellor and even Polamalu who never was good at handling the deep safety stuff. His only deep play on the good list was him in cover 2 for the browns game INT and that is cover 2 not 3 where he would be the lone safety.

 

Cyp much like Polamalu and Kam are box SS's that work best in the traffic near and just behind the front 7 as lurkers waiting for an opening. Either that or in cover 2 with help underneath. They just dont play that single high spot well and we on this board have talked about still needing that rangy FS to complete the secondary.

 

Donovin Darius was just like this.

 

Agree.  And Coughlin took Darius with the 25th pick of the 1st round.  Cyprien was taken where he was expected to come off the board.

 

Some people might not like it, but if Pryor is still around he could be that FS with our second pick.  Unfortunately I think both he and Dix could be gone by then.  But with so many needs we should still get an impact player no matter where we go with the pick.

A part of me is hoping for this. I know everyone wants a pass rusher,QB, WR or TE at 39 but in reality a FS like Pryor or Dix would give this secondary the ability to get the ball back for the offense more than sacks/pressure would. I want a premier pass rusher too but at #39 i dont see one having the impact a good FS would have for the defense.

 

We have veterans on the D-line some who are new additions who will improve our pass rush. Maybe not to a playoff level bit with a top flight secondary behind them making QBs hold the ball we might see some suprising numbers.

 

If Pryor or Dix were somehow still on the board id expect Gus to take a good hard look at them maybe even over a QB if we dont grab one in the first.

Found an article from PFF from this morning refocusing on Cyprien's rookie year.  Pretty much what I thought.  Here's to hoping he can continue to improve to be a permanent fixture at the position.

Good article, and rookies need to learn part of the process.  I think he'll improve even more this year especially if a great pass rusher like Clowney comes our way!

those two safeties will probably be gone by then. Pryor plays a lot like cyp. If clinton-dix was there it would be tough. Gonna have to see what the first round pick is first haha

Seattle got a similar player in the 5th round a few years ago.


I never did like the Cyprien selection at 33.


SS that aren't of Polamalu's ability don't have to be selected as high as we took Cyprien.

Baltimore and San Fran got similar players in the first round last year. Ozzie Newsome and Trent Baalke are terrible.

I disagree. If you draft someone in the first round, you gotta expect more than just getting a "quality starter". And I agree Darius was a decent starter. !st rounders gotta be players that are amongst the best players at their positions, once developed. Henderson, Stroud, Taylor, Boselli would all fit that criteria. They were worthy picks. 

 

Cyp at 33 is right on the cusp of a first rounder. So you gotta get close to that level I illustrated. Cyprien will top out at Darius level.

No, in the first round you need guys that will be the core of your team. You hope they can be pro-bowlers, but 32 guys get picked in the first round every year. All of them won't be pro-bowlers.

 

Now the top 10 is a different matter, in the top 10 you should be selecting elite prospects if they're available and never passing on an elite prospect for someone to fill a roster slot.

if you find a quality long term starter in the 2nd round there is nothing wrong with that. Realisticly how many players (in the second round) turn into long term productive players? Not that many
