2014 World Cup Discussion Thread

He didn't really stand out for me. Don't think he was bad, but not a star player.

Part of me thinks he could have placed his shot better for the effort that was cleared off the line, but that's probably harsh because the chance came to him very quickly. And again, the team as a whole could have kept possession better , so it's hard to single out Bradley for that.

Other players like Jones, Dempsey, Howard even Beckerman made more of an impression for me.

Last night's game was a statement about soccer in America. Nobody wanted to take a squad filled with MLS players seriously, and then we put Portugal on the brink of elimination.

Deandre Yedlin impressed the hell out of me. At 20 years old he's got a bright future ahead of him.

Quote:My knowledge of soccer isn't that good. What does everyone think of Michael Bradley? It seems like he missed an easy goal and kinda screwed it up at the end.

He was awful against Ghana. Yesterday he looked good in the first half, and then his play in the second half seemed real sloppy. Yes he should have scored, but that Portugal defender got lucky by being in the right place at the right time. As for the end, should he have held possession better? Absolutely, but the defenders needed to defend there at the end and Geoff Cameron was burned again.

I'm finding the whole extra time thing a bit confusing. Is there a clock that one of the judges uses to determine it, is it just a judges fancy?

Yep. You had 4 on 1 in the box and you let him score. Unacceptable.

The official game clock is kept on the field by the head official. I thought +5 was acceptable. I called it with the folks I was watching the game with just prior to the reffing letting officials know.

I just got mentioned on Jaguars Today because I had to tweet Dempsey and correct him on something. Stardom here I come.

Why not just do what the NFL and NBA do, stopping the clock after each play is stopped -- injuries, penalty cards, substitution?

It works fine the way it is.

I read on twitter this morning that because Zusi took his time coming off the field when being subbed off, the ref added an additional minute of extra time.

Is that normal? The announcers acted like everybody does that when protecting a lead.

yes its common for guys to take their time.  guys also lay on the ground and fake injuries.  I noticed Jones trying to do this... it didn't work. lol

It happens all the time. I've never seen time added on because of it though.

I feel like we will lose to Germany and Ghana will blow out Portugal.  UGH

Typical gamesmanship in soccer that goes on all over. Easy to look back at that as a reason.

Yeah, that's what I was asking is about adding the time being normal. The US coach post game interview came across as if he thinks there are some signs of favoritism to the supposed teams that are predicted to do well.

There probably is. FIFA is as corrupt as any organization in the world.

I think we can definitely draw against Germany. All they need is a draw to advance, so maybe they don't risk anything and just play for the draw. Who knows.
