Soccer fans are unreasonably defensive.

Unreasonably? This is a thread on the SOCCER World Cup, yet soccer is constantly being berated by those who have no willingness to attempt to understand the sport, instead just go about attacking it branding it boring etc.


I'm a Brit who grew up playing & loving soccer, and even played at a relatively high level, with players who have gone on to be pro, even one who has played & scored for England in this world cup. But I love and prefer football. I would rather watch football, and often have to defend football here against soccer fans.


"why do they keep stopping?", "why are so many of them fat?", "he ran 2 yards and they're celebrating?" "This is boring".


If you don't understand something and don't want to, then of course you'll find it boring.


If you watch MMA and don't understand or appreciate the technical aspects, then the majority of the time you'll just see two guys rolling around on the mat hugging

Mexico has not been good leading up to the WC. However, they got lucky to get in, and since have been playing very inspired.

Yes, some of their fans are ludicrous. But that doesn't take away from how they're performing right now.


I don't think the Dutch will throttle them. I think it'll be very close, especially if Ochoa keeps up his stellar keeping.


NED are likely to win. But I wouldn't be shocked if Mexico pulled it off.


I heard an analyst say that Mexico hasn't been to the Quarterfinals since the '80s? idk exactly when.

Could this be the year they break that streak?

I really do think it stems from the fact that soccer in this country has grown so much the last 5-10 years and they can't stand it. No matter how much they bash it, that won't change. Per game attendance in the MLS is higher then the NBA, the MLS just expanded again and the league is really doing well. The popularity is only rising.

 

If you think soccer is boring, I'd suggest giving a couple MLS games a watch. Portland-Seattle (First and foremost), San Jose-LA, NY-DC United, Houston-FC Dallas to name a few.

People do the same bashing American football. Either way it bothers me because I love both sports.

well put.. i like how u use "soccer" too.. i know that something that gets the brits panties in a wad..."they stole our name and ruined our game"blah blah blah blah... i think both sports have closed minded individuals who have never watched the other sport but still feel the need to say something.... i visited the fulham board the other day and about halfway through the first thread i saw about the jaguars, thats exactly what happen... some d bag said "oh yeah football, u mean that sport that takes 4 hours with 14 min of action", at which point a crew of d bag's chimed in.... morons will be morons i guess.... i played both sports as a kid and love them both so it sucks to see such a rift in the fan bases, but ive gotten use to it.

I didn't even say anything bad about your beloved sport, as I am very much enjoying the World Cup. However, the little I said was enough to illicit a "from the bottom of your broken heart" response. Chill out and quit being so defensive.

 

 

Like TMD said, the problem is you guys are so insistent on talking up your sport that you refuse to acknowledge any possible shortcomings. If I mentioned how lame the flopping has been, I'm sure it would illicit a "they fake injuries in all sports!!" response. If I mentioned that I think their celebrations are extreme, it would probably illicit a "you just don't understand the emotions!!" response.

 

I have no problem with talking about stupid NFL rules (like where teams kick from now), stupid MLB traditions (like coaches stalling the game by visiting the mound to allow their relief pitcher to warm up), or stupid NBA divas. For some reason, though, soccer fanboys get unreasonably defensive over any and all criticism of the game.

I think that seems to be an undertone in most of the articles and commentary I have seen. Soccer is not an American sport like baseball!! They sort of leave out that neither are golf or basketball.


I dont care if people dislike soccer. I laugh when so many (mostly older white) people feel the need to constantly remind us that they don't care about soccer.

People get defensive when attacked. It is reasonable for fans to be defensive when they are attacked, not unreasonable.
