He played the ball too far in front of him as he was changing direction and dove.

He was tripped. Position of the ball is irrelevant.

The position of the ball is relevant because forwards always dive when they take too big of a touch in the box. Your momentum doesn't go up and away when you are tripped; your momentum goes down

Theatrics notwithstanding Robben was touched and the Mexican defender gained an advantage. Clear penalty.

Soccer is a contact sport. Simulation is a foul.

As he simulated being tripped, nullifying any contact that may have been made by the defender.

That's not how the rules work in soccer. If the contact was enough to take the player down, the way the player goes down is irrelevant.

I should note BTW that Marquez had been tripping Robben most of the game, particularly in the 15 or so minutes leading up to the penalty.

DragonFury, do you ever consider the fact that you might not be completely unbiased at times? The announcers from two broadcasts called it a bad call. Trav says it's a bad call. I have no idea one or the other, but I'm wondering if the fact you are a Dutch fan might lead to bias.

Or do you claim to be 100% objective?

That is how the Laws if the Game work in soccer. Simulating a foul is NOT a foul against the opponent. The way a player goes down is relevant, because it is different in a foul or simulation.

Once again; Robben was contacted. The contact was enough for Mexico to gain a clear advantage because to prevented an attacking player from continuing his run on goal. That's a penalty regardless of how the attacking player went to the turf.

Gee, I hadn't considered that at all. Thank you captain obvious.

Here it is clear as day; contact from the Mexican defender without playing the ball:

So you just admitted that your opinion is biased?

An opinion is always biased. That doesn't automatically devalue it though.
